2. What is newlook? • User Interface (UI) • newlook is designed to provide System i users with an easy-to-use, Windows-based user interface. Called refacing, newlook provides a dynamic solution for modernizing System i applications. • newlook provides both a desktop and web-based user interface for your System i applications. • Development tool • newlook is also a development tool that allows you to: • Design the look and feel of newlook’s UI. • Add functionality (extending) to underlying System i screens, e.g. use newlook to create new screens/forms. • Integrate newlook with common desktop applications, e.g. MS Word, Excel and Email etc.

3. User Interface • New front-end • newlook provides a completely new front end for your System i application. Note: The underlying System i application remains unchanged; any additional functionality is completed using newlook’s development tools. • Adds color schemes • E.g. Change background of all screens to a specific color. • Adds images and icons • E.g. Include company logos or branding on newlook generated screens. • Adds graphical controls • E.g. Date Combos and Check Box controls. • Allows use of mouse • Maintains keyboard functions • E.g. Press F3 to exit menu.

Development Tool – Identify • Identify • Identify is newlook's dynamic mechanism for overriding default conversion information used to translate System i screen elements into GUI-based equivalents. • Specifically, Identify is used to: re-assign a screen element’s category, add new screen elements, and hide unwanted screen elements.

27. Development Tool – Designer • Designer • Designer is newlook's fully-functional graphical editor, and is primarily used to customize the look and feel of newlook generated screens or GUI. • Specifically, Designer is used to add and edit graphical controls.

28. Development Tool – Macro Editor • Macro Editor • The Macro Editor, along with Designer is used to add new functionality (extend), and integrate newlook with other desktop applications, such as MS Word.

Summary • newlook is a user interface used to view System i screens in graphical form, e.g. via addition of Windows- based GUI controls, colors and menu interactivity. • newlook is also a development tool used to design newlook screens, and extend functionality via Designer and the Macro Editor. • newlook can be deployed on the desktop or via the web. • newlook can extend existing System i application functionality by: • Creation of new forms • New business rules • Combining/splitting screens • Hiding unwanted screens (silent navigation) • newlook can be used to integrate your underlying System i application with common desktop applications and local/network printers.
