  1. T.C. Knapp ElementaryMr. Boggs’ 3rd Grade ClassWeek of October 1st, 2012 • Dear Families, • The Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) in reading is this Tuesday. A pink letter went home on Thursday afternoon of last week explaining the process. Your child was to get your signature on the paper. Please make sure your child is at school on Tuesday. All of the students need to take the test together on this day. Try to avoid scheduling doctors appointments, vacations, etc. on Tuesday. Thank you! Sincerely, Mr. Boggs • Reading As the OAA is on Tuesday, October 2nd, I have explained to the students that they must do their very best! I am firm believer in positive attitude. Those students who believe they can do well, will do well! Encourage your child to give their best effort no matter the outcome. I am very proud of all of my students thus far this year. They are ALL capable of achieving greatness! Below I have again listed strategies for the OAA:(1) Look for a word bank • (2) Eliminate the throw-away answer(3) Go back and RE-READ! • (4) Underline key words and key information(5) Stay inside the box and on the lines(6) Check over the test– WRITE NEATLYSpellingThe students will again have their spelling test over Unit #7 on Friday, October 5th. A spelling word search will again be sent home on Monday. Please study these words throughout the week with your child. Frequently misspelled words include:(1) which (2) children(3) again (4) until • Math: The students will have their math test over Chapter 3 (Addition up to 10,000) on Monday, October 1st. The students will be asked to add and subtract numbers up to 10,000. The students will also engage in non-regrouping and regrouping problems related to addition and subtraction. There will also be four extended response questions in which the students will have to apply their previously learned skills and strategies in order to solve.Lastly, the students were introduced to PALs (Problem, Answer, Label, Statement) and bossy words last week. Both are key strategies to be used whenever solving word problems. The students will be able to use their PALs and Bossy Words handout helpers during the test. Good luck to all of my students! • Science: Last week, we finished our units on energy and recycling. This week, we will gear up and head into the world of habitats. The students will learn about organisms and how those organisms depend on their habitat for their survival needs.
