Overview

  • Modem is short for modulator-demodulator

  • Device that is connected to a computer

  • Transmit data through telephone or cabal lines

  • Modulates signals of analog types for coding

  • Demodulates the signals to decode the information


Special terms acronyms

  • Modulator – transmits signals out a phone line in analog form

  • Demodulator – receives signals from a phone line turning them back to digital forms

  • ISP – Internet Service Provider

  • Mpbs – Mega bits per second

  • Bpbs – Bits per second

  • ADSL – Asymmetric digital subscriber line

  • Commercial Modems came into existence in the 1960s

  • late 1970s, modems had speeds of 300bps

  • 300bps equivalent to 0.000286102295 Mbps

  • The 56K modem was invented by Dr. Brent Townshend in 1996.

  • Average internet speed in 1st world countries is 40.65 Mbps

  • This will travel down phone lines

  • They then pass through a second modem

  • This will demodulate the signals back to the ISP
