  2. Annual surveys Purposes 1. To assess annual and spatial variability of community structure; 2. To identify the role of variation in habitat variables in explaining patterns; 3. To establish how spatio-temporal variability might be driven by oceanographic features (e.g., internal waves) and conditions (e.g., El Nino), and altered by anthropogenic actions (e.g., marine reserves).

  6. Annual surveys What • All identifiable fish- Rockfishes, surfperches, greenlings • Estimate sizes- total length to nearest centimeter • Three levels in water column (where canopy present)- bottom- midwater- surface canopy (conducted later in year)

Safety considerations • Dive profiles- Approved by DSO- Well within no-decompression limits- Maximum depth 20m- 5 min safety stops mandatory on dives below 10m • Buddy system- Members of a dive team are always in visual contact • Site considerations- Diving will only be conducted in good conditions • Live boating- Fish teams are usually live boated
