  2. Forms of Government • anarchy – the complete absence of government, often means no individual freedom or consent of the governed.

  3. Forms of Government • Autocracy – rule by one person, power and authority are in the hands of one; usually individual freedom and consent of the governed is limited. • monarchy – a king, queen, or emperor whose position is inherited, exercises the supreme powers of government

  4. Forms of Government • Autocracy • dictatorship / totalitarianism – ideas of a single leader or group should control all aspects of life, use of military / violence, no freedom or consent of the governed.

  5. Forms of Government • Oligarchy – a system of government in which a small group holds power; power is derived from any combination of wealth, military, religion, and/or social position. usually with few, if any, freedoms / consent

  6. Forms of Government • Oligarchy • aristocracy – a form of oligarchy in which those in power derive power from social position • theocracy – a form of oligarchy in which those in power derive power from religious authority

Forms of Government • Democracy – a form of government in which the rule is by the people, individual freedoms and consent are protected by the power of the people and limited gov’t • The US has an indirect democracy, a representative democracy or a republic, that is also federal (power is divided between the central and the state gov’ts)
