Goals for this Parent Retreat: • Provide “nuts and bolts” information - help parents navigate student through the next four years at Granite Bay High School • Build bridges between GBHS and families • Provide a greater understanding of adolescent behavior • Inform parents about important issues facing teens and their families – alcohol, drugs, peer pressure and bullying

Attendance Policies • Parent’s responsibility to clear their students’ absence within three days. • Absence not cleared – automatic “CUT” in computer system. • Ways to “clear” students’ absence : - Call attendance hotline (916) 786-8676 ext. 5167 - Written note (name of student, dates of absence, reason for absence, phone number, signature of parent/guardian) • Students arriving late must bring note or parent is to call ext. 5107.

More Attendance Policies • Early dismissal from school: - Morning of dismissal - parent calls ext. 5107 or student brings note to attendance window to obtain “Special” pass (to show teacher). • “Last minute” appointments – Parent calls attendance office. 15 minutes needed to pull student from class. * Note: Parents wishing to contact their student to dismiss them from class must first contact the office. DO NOT TEXT OR CALL YOUR STUDENT DURING CLASS.

Kinds of Absences Excused • Personal illness • Medical, dental appointment • Funeral of immediate family member • Court appearance • Observation of religious holiday or retreat (no more than four days per month) Note: Student is permitted/expected to make work up Unexcused or Unapproved • Traffic/car problems • Oversleeping • Family vacations/trips • “Personal business” * Note: It is individual teacher decision if assignments missed may be made up for full class credit

Procedures for Planned Absences • May include athletic and band events, personal medical or vacation plans • Field Trips and “vacations” - students must obtain “Teacher Release for Field Trip Form” from front office (pink) • Have each teacher sign form • Students should submit homework for classes to be missed BEFORE the absence or it may not be accepted. • Homework should be submitted directly to the teacher; or given to the receptionist. • Students should meet with the teacher prior to a planned absence to arrange to take tests or quizzes scheduled for the day(s) of the absence.

Two more notes on attendance: *** What to do if student is incorrectly marked absent: • Student pick up a slip in Attendance Office • Get it verified and signed by the teacher that the student was present • Then return it back to the Attendance office.*** Note: For every day a student misses school, that student really misses 2-3 days of instruction when on the block schedule. GBHS loses $85 per day per kid each time a student is absent from school – for any reason! It is very important to keep kids in school. We can’t teach an empty seat.

Transportation Bussing • Bus passes purchased in office • Bus transportation provided for some sports (coach will inform parents) • Parents may drive other students home from practice and games • Parents wishing to drive students to games MUST FIRST pick up forms in office, have car checked out by district transportation personnel Picking Up, Dropping Off • Avoid parking lot for drop-offs, pick-up • Best location for drop-off – on street • DO NOT STOP ON RED CURB • DO NOT STOP IN OR NEAR CROSS WALK OR BUS ZONE • Organize a carpool

Home-Hospital Instruction • Instruction can be provided in home to any student who cannot come to school due to extended medical reasons (3+ weeks) per doctors’ orders. • Written request must be made by doctor and parent through student’s school counselor. • Credentialed teacher delivers instruction and administers tests.

A message from our nurse –Linda Warfield Note: Linda Warfield is a RN with a nursing credential Days @ GBHS: M TuTh Fri • Goal: “To provide necessary health care to all students and get them back to class ASAP. “ Process / procedure for a student not feeling well : • Nurse is available in office before school, during lunch and passing periods. • If a student is not feeling well during class - student is to notify teacher, teacher will give student a written pass to give to nurse Warfield. • Note: STUDENT SHOULD NOT CONTACT PARENT BEFORE VISITING NURSE. Nurse will determine if student must go home, then parent will be called.

  16. . . . two more messages from the nurse Medications at school • NO student may have any medication on person while at school (per State Law) • If Rx or OTC must be used, parent and doctor must fill out form and have on file in nurse’s office. • All meds are to be kept in nurse’s office and taken in the nurse’s office Emergency Cards VERY IMPORTANT! • Make sure you have filled out and have a current emergency card on file at the school. • Must be parent’s signature on card • Note: Hospitals require emergency card to provide care.

Dress Code “It is Granite Bay High School’s legal and ethical responsibility for establishing a classroom and campus atmosphere that creates the appropriate environment for teaching and learning. Clothing worn on campus must reflect good taste and a sense of modesty to enhance an atmosphere conducive to learning. “ GBHS Student Handbook

  18. General Dress Policy • Garments must be neat, clean and in good repair (no holes). • Pants, shorts and skirts must fit at waist, above the hipbones. No visible underwear. • Footwear must be worn at all times, per state law. • Shirts and tops must cover the entire torso, including chest, back and midriff. Tube tops, halter-tops, back-less tops, scoop-neck tops, low ‘V-neck’ tops, half shirts, and muscle shirts are not appropriate. • Shorts, skirts and dresses length: No shorter than fingertips length when arm is extended at side • Clothing , jewelry imitating gang –style attire or ‘gang colors’ is strictly prohibited. • Clothing with messages, pictures, or symbols depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, profanity, violence or disruptive, intimidating or dangerous THE TOP THREE VIOLATIONS: 1. Skirts, shorts, dresses too short 2. Holes in jeans/pants 3. Tops (girls) cut too low, off shoulder or no back

  19. Cell Phones / Electronic Devices • Absolutely prohibited during class time – unless authorized by teacher. • PLEASE DO NOT text or call any student during class time. Review bell schedule before attempting to make contact with your student. • Reminder – if you are picking up your student for an early dismissal, contact the office, then the office will contact the teacher/student.

Consequences Student Consequences (after phone delivered to office by teacher) 1st offence – referral indicated on students’ record, student picks up phone after school 2nd offence – referral indicated on student’s record, parent must come into office to pick up phone 3rd offence – referral indicated on student’s record, parent must pick up phone, ALL electronic devices are prohibited at school, student is suspended

  21. Academic Dishonesty “Our GBHS community believes that the school should maintain a climate in which honesty, courtesy, consideration, integrity and a concern for others are highly valued. Cheating is an obstacle to achieving these goals.” • Reasons students cheat: - pressure for grades - not enough time to finish all the required homework - students taking advantage of teachers not monitoring - unrealistic parent expectations - inefficient study skills None of these reasons make cheating acceptable. Cheating denies the value of education.

  22. Academic Dishonesty cont. . . Our teaching staff strives to put the importance of learning above the importance of grades and to convince students that their best efforts are all that anyone should expect.

  23. Athletic Eligibility A student athlete must maintain academic eligibility in order to participate in sports: • GPA must be at least a 2.0 at grade report time - AND • Does not have more than one “F” in a class

Accessing grades on-line • Step 1 – Create New Account (bottom left) • Step 2 - Enter email, password • Step 3 – Respond to email message from HomeLinkHelp • Step 4 – Follow directions, will need student’s permanent six digit ID # • To Finish – Enter the address http://rosevileehsd.net into Explorer GBHS website has Aeries instruction sheet

Communication With students’ teacher: With athletic coach: 1st – advise student to discuss matter with coach If issue persists, parent call or email coach If questions or concerns persists, contact Athletic Director, Tim Healy via e-mail or phone (ext. • 1st - advise student to approach teacher with questions, comments, concerns (this empowers student to take responsibility for own success) • E-mail teacher t for best way to communicate • Teachers will discuss their communication policy at Back-to-School Night (9-22-11)

  28. “Special Deliveries” Attention Parents: All deliveries of forgotten items are discouraged! • In the event of absolute necessity please bring “item” in a bag with their name on it to the front office.

  29. Dances • Tickets – student purchases during lunch, after school at attendance window • No re-admittance • Most dances end at 11:00 pm- sharp • Pick-up students promptly (11:15 pm) • Dress – theme dances; Homecoming is non-date, casual; Winter Ball, date or single, semi-formal (girls- dresses, guys- shirt and tie) NOTE: All fines and trash duties must be cleared before purchasing a ticket.

Tips for helping your teen become a successful student at Granite Bay Tip #1: Stay Connected • Check grades 2x per week • Visit web often http://granitebayhigh.org • Volunteer, go to events • When in doubt, call Tip #2: Hold Student Accountable • Don’t take “okay” for an answer • Expect effort and quality • Set basic rules for studying/homework Tip #3: Help your student manage stress • Check with student before making plans • Show understanding and support • Assist student with time management

  33. Next Steps and Thank You! • By Thursday evening you should have a communiqué from School Messenger. It will include an e-survey of tonight’s retreat. • If you do not receive the email please contact the school registrar at Mswartz@rjuhsd.us and me at Dvujovich@rjuhsd.us • There is a parent meeting before Back to School Night for all 9th Grade Parents on August 22. • We will plan a next meeting for the week of September 5th for follow-up and new ideas.
