Changing Workplace • White collar jobs increased • Blue collar jobs decreased • Consumerism dominates the work place • Franchises, corporations, business growths tremendously • Conformity also dominates the work place and society
Scientific Advances • The transistor radio • In 1946 the first computers are used to calculate data • Jet airliners • Plastics, lightweight metals, jet engine, affordable travel for the masses
The New Mass Media • The rise of TV • I Love Lucy, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Lone Ranger, Dragnet • Hollywood lost viewers due to the TV • Radio began to feature more music, news, weather, and sports • Car radios!
Rock ‘n’ Roll • Born from Rhythm and Blues music, originally known as black music • Elvis Presley becomes the “King of Rock ‘N’ Roll” • Created a new group in society known as ‘teenagers’ • United by their music, creates the first generation gap
The Beat Movement • Counter culture • Did not want to ‘fit in’ to the conformist mentality of the 1950s • Did not support the pop culture movements • Most well known for writing (poetry), and art • Jack Kerouac- On the Road
