6. Close your eyes.

7. Now imagine there is a box in front of you. • This is your box, all of its details are up to you. The box can be magic or have technology from the future. It can be as simple or as complex as you like. • Now imagine for me what colour it is, what’s it made of, how does it open, are there any buttons or markings on it? Try picking it up and seeing how heavy it is. Put it up to your face. Does it smell of anything?

8. Now • For the next couple of minutes, I want you to write down a description of your box.

10. The point • While some of your boxes may be similar, no two are the same. Each of you are unique and will have ideas neither your classmates nor I would ever think of. • You are the next generation of authors, of screenwriters (movies), of playwrights and of poets.

11. The Magic Box by Kit Wright I will put in the box the swish of a silk sari on a summer night,fire from the nostrils of a Chinese dragon, the tip of a tongue touching a tooth. I will put in the box a snowman with a rumbling belly,a sip of the bluest water from Lake Lucerne,a leaping spark from an electric fish. I will put into the box three violet wishes spoken in Gujarati,the last joke of an ancient uncle,and the first smile of a baby. I will put into the box a fifth season and a black sun,a cowboy on a broomstickand a witch on a white horse. My box is fashioned from ice and gold and steel,with stars on the lid and secrets in the corners.Its hinges are the toe joints of dinosaurs. I shall surf in my boxon the great high-rolling breakers of the wild Atlantic,then wash ashore on a yellow beachthe color of the sun.

19. Now make your own poem. • Use this poem as a template, a starting point. • Begin each stanza with • ‘I will put in the box’ or ‘I will put into the box’. • Begin the line with ‘the’ or ‘a’ or something ‘from’ somewhere. • End your poem with what it looks like and what you will do in it.
