  2. Outline • Introduction • What is NFC? • what is BLE? • Compare BLE and NFC • What is ibeacon? • How to use estimote? • Why it might be an NFC killer? • Why is so afforable? • Beacon vs NFC • Application of Beacon

  3. Introduction Belle

  4. introduction • What is NFC? • NFC = Near Field Communication • NFC is a short-range, low power wireless link evolved from radio-frequency identification (RFID) tech • that can transfer small amounts of data between two devices held a few centimeters from each other.

  6. introduction • What is BLE? • BLE = Bluetooth low energy • BLE is a wireless personal area network technology • designed and marketed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. • aimed at novel applications in the healthcare, fitness, security, and home entertainment industries. • BLE is intended to reduced power consumption and cost while maintaining a similar communication range. (2402-2480 MHz) • BLE allows apps to communicate with BLE devices that have low power requirements, such as proximity sensors, heart rate monitors, fitness devices, and so on. • How it works ? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_hgNYpOYKQ

  7. introduction • BLE applications • Automotive applications • Home Automation applications • Smart energy applications • Security and proximity applications • Consumer wellness applications • Entertainment applications http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bifVc_iC2Y

  10. Introduction of beacon Fiona

  11. iBeacon? There are lots of information on that feature on the internet, they say that it will change the market of mobile payments, indoor navigation and will be a killer of NFC.

  12. What is iBeacon? • iBeacon is the Apple Trademark for an indoor positioning system that Apple Inc. calls “a new class of low-powered, low-cost transmitters that can notify nearby iOS 7 devices of their presence.” • The iBeacon works on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), also known as Bluetooth Smart. BLE can also be found on Bluetooth 4.0 devices that support dual mode.

  13. What is an Estimote Beacon? • An Estimote Beacon is a small wireless device. When placed in a physical space, it broadcasts tiny radio signals to smart devices • Smartphones that are in range are able to 'hear' these signals and estimate their location very precisely, as well as to communicate with the beacon to exchange data and information

  14. How does it work exactly? • Each tiny Beacon has a built-in Bluetooth 4.0 chip, also called a BLE . The beacon can run for up to 2 years on a single included battery. The hardware is covered with the soft silicone case housing which also has sticky back side, allowing it to be easily attached to any flat surface.

  15. How to integrate Estimote technology into your app? • Once you have ordered your Estimote Beacons, they will provide you with a simple code snippet that you can include in your mobile app to seamlessly integrate our technology into your existing mobile offering. • Keep in mind that these sensors can do so much more than simply broadcast their location.

  16. Using Beacons • Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUIqfjpInxY • Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrsHBjzt2E8

  17. Why iBeacon might be a NFC killer? • Range • NFC tags are pretty cheap compared to NFC chips, but NFC tags are required on each product because NFC works only in very close proximity. • Affordable • Estimote, a company which just launched to sell beacons, is taking pre-orders at the price of $99 for 3 beacons.
