  1. ATLAS Review

  2. Outline • Glasgow current activities • Physics: Higgs, min-bias and UE, di-leptons, jets • Software/computing: tag DB interface, ComparatorATLFASTC, Software validation, Data management • Hardware: SCT, ID: Cooling, DCS, monitoring; triggering: min-bias trigger slice, single-beam trigger • Upgrade  Val • Questions • Where are we? • Where are we going in the next 3 years • What do we need? • What is missing?

  3. ATLAS Physics • Higgs searches, current • ttH: Chris, Saverio, Helen • Focus on ttH, low mass channel, Glasgow heritage • Leadership through CSC exercise • All-hadronic channel is Glasgow project • Statistical methods: Samir, Tony, Catherine • Generic robust methods of combining channels • How to handle different systematics • Combining Higgs channels • Future • Continue ttH • Overall leadership • Areas to target? B-tagging? B-jets? tt-background? • But focussed on one channel: Move into other channels? – effort? • Dave+Genevieve: tau-tau, low mass, VBF • Rick, Sasha, Stan: WH, ZH, complements ttH (short term—manpower?) • How to exploit CDF experience on WW and EW?

  4. ATLAS Physics • Top physics (new activity) • Craig, Kenny, Sarah, Saverio • Initially QCD study – linked to Glasgow theory -- John Campbell • First step to ttH • Determine ttH background • Key to b-tagging? • High mass di-leptons • Samir • First searches • Manpower?

  5. ATLAS Physics • Minimum bias/underlying event, current • Will, Craig, Arthur,Dan • Aim for first paper, 2008, follow up 2009? • Experience in tracking and triggering • Ties in with Glasgow hardware – SCT • High profile niche • Link to many channels and jets • Future • Lose Will – serious loss no replacement • MB work end in 2009? • Carry on working on UE, important to many channels? • Jets, current • High Et jet studies: Dan, Craig • Jet algorithms and b-tagging: Stan, Sasha • Azimuthal decorrelations • Future • Uncertain due to manpower issues

  6. ATLAS Timelines • 2008 • Single beams from July for 2 monthsbeam-gas and beam-halodetector tests, system tests, alignment, data-handling, software • Oct-Nov, colliding beams at 10TeV, L=1030, SL=100pb-1 (?!) • Physics: minbias, W/Z production, di-leptons, top production, jets • Detector: trigger, reconstruction, data-handling, tag DB • Glasgow papers: Single-beam, Min-bias, what about top and b-tagging? Also di-leptons • Glasgow leadership: Single-beam triggering and reconstruction ID commissioning, Data-management, tag DB? • What else could we do? Top and b-tagging; single beam reconstruction • 2009 • Beams at 14TeV (dates?) • Luminosity • Physics: W/Z, top, b-tagging, inclusive SUSY, extend dilepton reach • Glasgow paper: Min-bias and UE, Higgs? Statistical combinations critical • Glasgow leadership: ???

  7. Diagram Min-bias/UE 2008 First data 100pb-1 @ 10TeV Min-bias, jets,W/Z, top, di-leptons Detector commissioning: ID/SCT, b-tagging, triggering, single-beam operaton top/tth VBF-taus VBF taus? Still re-discovering the SM First searches: inclusive SUSY, Higgs Combination of channels 2009 1fb-1 @ 14TeV statistics Detector understood? Searches in channels First Higgs exclusion and possible discovery 2010 10fb-1 @ 14 TeV ttH/top

  8. Hardware+Software • ID and SCT • Saverio, Dan, Aidan, Craig, Val • Triggering • Will, Samir • Comparator and ATLFAST-C • Chris, Sarah,Tony, Tom • Tag DB: Mike + Tom +Tony + Helen • Data management • Graeme Stewart+Tony+Andrew Elwell • What do we take forward? • Make a key contribution to experiment • Maximise effort for physics

  9. Define Core programme • Physics • Higgs, ttH? • Underlying event. mpi? • ID/SCT • monitoring, DCS • Software: • ??? • Criteria: • Critical mass? • Is it high profile?

  10. Critical issues • Single-beam: triggering and reconstruction in ID and SCT – we are in a strong position here • b-tagging: using top-sample to calibrate and optimise b-tagging, key for ttH and many other channels  how to get involved? • ttH all hadronic, Glasgow project • Multi-vertex events, not looked at in too much detail (check with Chris about ttH analysis)even at low lumi this is an issue • b-jet calibration, improve b-resolution key to ttH+other searches

  11. What is missing? • Engaging with theorists • Don’t have natural B-physics link with lattice group • Don’t have natural link with SUSY (DJM) • Link to QCD John Campbell, weak at the moment • Links to Edinburgh? • Involvement in reconstruction software • Important to understand reconstruction and the gossip factor • Natural link to tracking through hardware and monitoring • Natural LTA
