  3. MDT is Leading the Nation • MDT’s initiative to undertake an IT/ITS Strategic Plan puts the agency in the nation’s forefront in terms of a compliance strategy for the FTA Policy • No other agency has so closely aligned its ITS deployments against its Business Vision, Mission and Goals

  4. Why MDT’s IT/ITS Strategic Plan is Important • Major step toward compliance with Federal Transit Administration’s Policy on Conformance with the National ITS Architecture • April 8, 2005 deadline for regional ITS architectures • Transit must comply or risk losing FTA operating and capital grant funding

  5. IT/ITS Plan Demonstrates Good Management Practice • Demonstrates prudent management of People’s Transportation Plan resources

  6. Provides Foundation for Business-Driven Technology Applications • A business-driven foundation for information flows and technology deployments

  7. How? By Creating a Strong Internal Architecture…

  8. …That Will Support MDT’s Core Functions

  9. How Will MDT Get There?

  10. What It Will Take to Succeed • Start with current projects and see how they fit into Strategic Initiatives; then prioritize them • A Systems Engineering Approach is critical (includes alternatives analysis, stakeholder participation in project scoping, life-cycle costing, benefit/cost analysis, etc.)

  11. What It Will Take to Survive • Business units working together with other business units and with the IT Department to build an internal architecture thatwill support MDT’s Core Functions — one project at a time. • Training in the use of information management, standards and systems engineering will help equip staff to make project specification and procurement align with Strategic Plan elements
