    1. Bowen Family Systems Therapy Psy 660 Gary S. Katz, Ph.D.

    2. Role Play Break into groups of 4-5 Conduct a 10-15min role-play using the process question. One student is the therapist, two students play a couple in treatment, other students are the observers. Time-outs can be called by the therapist at any time.

    3. Role Play Suggested topics for the “clients” Parents differing in their views on child rearing or division of labor in the home. Parents stress about their young adult son/daughter’s curfew during the holiday/summer break from college. Son or daughter wishes to get a tattoo or motorcycle. Remember: Process questions are designed to slow down the couple who are arguing Therapist is not there to solve the problem or settle the dispute; therapist is to observe and comment on the process of the interaction.

    4. Role Play Discussion What impact did the process questions have on the quality of the couple’s interactions? How did the couple experience the therapist’s interventions? Other feedback?

    5. Discussion Consider Bowen’s notion that people seek out partners with identical levels of differentiation of self. Do you think this is true? Why might people marry partners at similar levels of differentiation? According to Bowen, why would a mismatch fail?

    6. Discussion Take a few minutes to jot down answers to the following open-ended sentences as they regard to your family of origin: The family I come from could best be described as … In my family, my mother/father was always the one who … In my family, everyone always thought that I … One topic that we didn’t discuss in my family was … Disagreement in my family was handled by … An emotion rarely expressed in my family was … What I like best about my family is … If I could change anything about my family, it would be …

    7. Discussion Generate a list of things that you believe family members should not do – cheat on their partners, abuse drugs or alcohol, blame other people for mutual problems, etc. Discuss how you could overcome feeling judgmental in order to work effectively with a family in which some members did those things.
