Welcome to Miss Grant’s
2nd Grade Classroom
Clark Elementary School
Parents’ Open House
July 30, 2012
I just graduated from Indiana University with a degree in both Special and Elementary Education. BUT, I am no stranger to Clark! I student taught with both Julie Wolfe (resource) and Jamie Clawson (first grade) last year.
Along with graduating, I just recently ran my first mini marathon with my dad and we are currently training for the full marathon in November! YIKES!
In December, I adopted a puppy and he takes up a wonderful but large amount of my free time. His name is Riley and he is a mix of German Sheppard and Blue Tick Healer.
I am looking forward to getting to know everyone throughout the year and I cannot wait for the year to get underway! If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact me.
Welcome to second grade!
The Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, listening to reading, writing, and word work) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals.
Writing Block (6 + 1 Writing Traits) and Power Writing
We use the EnVision Math Program. EnVision is a new math program adopted by CPCSC last school year. There are a variety of online resources, hands on manipulatives, and many other wonderful resources. I will have a link soon on my website to the EnVision site so you will be able to explore! We will also be working on establishing Daily 5 flexible math groups later in the year.
Below is a list of Social Studies standards that will be covered throughout the school year. Social studies is often incorporated into reading instruction.

As we prepare for Common Core Learning, we need to gather materials for our standards-based portfolios. These portfolios are notebooks that each student will use to collect work samples, to record the Common Core Standards, to list key vocabulary and create new learning goals.
Your child will share his/her portfolio with you during conferences. Each child will need materials to create the portfolios. Materials that can be donated include;
We will have a computer lab rotation in our related arts time this year!
The kids will be learning how to improve typing skills, search for information on a website with internet safety, how to use Microsoft word, including how to insert pictures, and how to create power point presentations.

Your child will have a “Sea Log” Binder. This is a one inch binder that will serve as your child’s homework/communication folder.
Students will write their assignments in the agenda and bring home every night. Please look over the agenda and help them with work if needed.
READ, READ, READ… try and read to your child or have your child read to you on a daily basis! Practice makes permanent!
This folder is a red folder that will come home every Wednesday’s with papers from the week. Important papers for our classroom and our school will be sent home in this folder. Please return the empty folders to school on Thursday. Please check the homework section in the Sea Log daily in case there are any important papers that need to be sent home before or after Wednesday!
I plan to send out a classroom newsletter every week on Monday. I will be giving you important information in the newsletters so please read them carefully. If you have an e-mail account I will send you a copy electronically, if not or if you would prefer, I can send a newsletter home with your child in their Sea Log.
We will do a birthday recess one day every month to celebrate these special days.
