Changing Landscape • Higher Education @ work • Acceleration of engagement with employers • Govt wants Universities to work with SSCs, RDAs to develop programmes based on employer needs • By 2014 the govt want 36% (currently 31%) of the working population to have level 4(degree level) or above qualifications • Variable Fees 2009- 2010 • Findings of the Govt Review due in 2009 www.wlv.ac.uk

Changing Landscape • Demographics/ELQ • Reduced number of UG FT students and increase in PT • Need to defend existing markets and find new ones • Financial Impact of ELQ: we have to replace 600 to 700 fte HEFCE funded students. • Replacement and growth via Foundation Degrees and Employer Engagement • David Eastwood (HEFCE) on 7 April 2008 urged… www.wlv.ac.uk

  6. How we are responding (medium term) • Build on 14-19 achievements • Grow applied research and knowledge transfer • Employer Engagement in development of UG, PG, accredited CPD courses www.wlv.ac.uk

How we are responding (unlocking capacity ) • Establish a CPPD company by October 2008 • Centralise support for e-learning and curriculum development • Centralise leadership for FD development and ‘employer engagement’ • Reform UG curriculum – traditional and FD route in each area; smaller number of high quality modules; rationalise content and assessments www.wlv.ac.uk

How we are responding (2008-09 investments) • 25 new academic posts in schools • Accelerated improvements to AV teaching technologies • Accelerated implementation of security strategy • Student PC upgrades • Timetabling, Alumni and HR systems • Re-vamped Marketing strategy • Director of Strategic Developments appointed www.wlv.ac.uk

  9. Progress to Date • Retention and Progression • NSS (2008) we have reached 63% response rate! • Opening of Walsall Learning and Teaching Building • We have strong bids for i54 and i-Central developments www.wlv.ac.uk
