Project Goals • Train 50 high school teachers, over a three year period • Enroll 2,500 students • Broaden participation for female and minority students • Develop curricular materials • Evaluate both professional development and curricular materials • Be a national leader in the new AP CS Principles course/exam • Improve the overall awareness of computer science opportunities available to Alabama students

Key Professional Development Dates • This training is required for your participation in the project: • Late-May through mid-July—Online content-specific professional development (on-line meetings twice a week for 8 weeks plus approximately 3-4 hours per week of independent work) • June 23-27—A week-long Advanced Placement Summer Institute–like training (at the University of Alabama)

Project Evaluation • Project evaluation conducted by Haynie Research • Project assessment helps us to improve the course and provide feedback to the National Science Foundation • Types of information • Student Demographics (Student’s identified by code only) • Pre and Post Course Surveys for Students and Teachers • Bi-Weekly Feedback form (Teachers) • Collection of student work • IRB Requirements • Those students counted in the study must fill out assent/consent forms (students and parents must sign) • Students may take your course and not be part of the study, but we strongly encourage explaining the importance of participating to students and parents

Teacher Expectations • Assist in approving CSP course adoption • Participate in meetings with grant leaders • Promote the course and recruit students • Manage equipment purchases • Participate in summer on-line content-specific professional development • Attend a week-long Advanced Placement Summer • Participate in homework exercises and biweekly webinars • Participate in the NSF supported Community of Practice • Respond to evaluation surveys and data requests from project evaluator • Participate in the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and the CSTA Alabama chapter activities

  13. Incentives • Financial Incentives for Teachers • Each teacher will be eligible to receive up to $3,300 for meeting expectations and completing the designated activities. The financial incentives are available only during the first year of participationand paid in two installments. • Additional Incentives • $2,000 equipment allowance for the first year of program participation • Registration and travel for attending week-long APS-like summer training and curriculum meetings (up to $1,050)
