Grant celebrated Union hero • Grant was personally moral, but he surrounded himself with a CORRUPT administration • This administration worked hand in hand with Big Business to legislate laws that favored the tycoons • Entrepreneurs took advantage of the lack of government authority/ used government to benefit them • Big Business was born…. Here’s the story

Morgan?) owned HALF of the rail roads in the nation • His friends (literally) owned the other half FIXED PRICES EXORBIENTLY HIGH, what did this accomplish? STOP AND THINK What is a monopoly?

Who Runs the World  Gold • After the war, the nation was funded by gold: gold gold and black gold= • In 1859 oil was struck in Pennsylvania, this gave an Ohioan name John Davidson Rockefeller an idea… he “knew” oil would be the next big thing, and he would make Cleveland the place to refine and distribute it • Then, (*just like in the game,) he put together ALL of the companies that had to do with oil (the Standard Oil Trust)  First of many almighty trust= STOP AND THINK What would an almighty trust allow you to do ?

The Gilded Age- The Rich Get Richer… • The Gilded Age was a time of naked greed, robber barons were making bank, as the rest of America was still recovering from the _____ _______ and HAD to bend to their will • Charles Darwin published his book, Origin of the Species, about natural selection= • Capitalist translated natural selection into economics ***Robber Barons claimed that government should not interfere with social welfare because those who were rich, were rich because they were the fittest and worked the hardest 

Model T- Henry Ford

The Golden Door • America is a nation of immigrants • Everytime a new wave of immigrants came, the Americans that were here resented the immigrants because…… • When immigrants came they saw the Statue of Liberty- “Give me Your Tired Your Poor, Your Hungry…” • STOP AND THINK- Is this different from Today? The Other Half • The poor during this time were EXTREMELY poor, and the RICH were EXTREMEMLY rich • The poor lived in slums • Teddy Roosevelt wrote a book called, “How The Other Half Live” This inspired reform

Labor Organization to Fight Oppression • Knights of Labor- 1878- UNION (both skilled and unskilled worker… will fall apart after big strike failed - 8 hour work day - Lead Strikes - Fought Monopolies • AFL- American Federation of Labor Great Strikes • People started to realize, without the cogs (worker bees,) the machine doesn’t run! - Homestead Strike - Pullman Strike
