  2. Rural Energy Kiosks (REK) are Ideal for off grid areas/rural areas of Sub Saharan Africa

  3. In Kenya, any one (or a combination of the following sources) is used depending on availability and applicability: Pico/Micro Hydro Solar Photovoltaic Wind Electric Generators Biomass: Organic Waste & Slaughter house waste; Biogas Digester Biomass: Vegetable Oil; Diesel Generator

  4. This is the facility where the generated power is brought, stored in (Deep Cycle) batteries if needed, and converted and distributed. Various electrical accessories like storage battery banks, inverters, control units, energy meters etc are housed here The Information Communication Technology Centre can be in the PCC room along with other (electrical and electronic) gadgets.

  5. The Industrial Shed for productive activities depends on the location of the Kiosk, the needs of the community as well as available energy. Trading or Business Centre. With light industrial activities like flour milling, metal welding, carpentry workshops, oil expeller, hair clipping and salon, and soap making. A LED lamp recharging & Assembly facility. (youth Employment) Can recharge LED lamps, mobile phones and car batteries

  6. The Industrial Shed for productive activities depends on the location of the Kiosk, the needs of the community as well as available energy. Power to Community Services. Connection to Public Services (Schools, Health Centres, with a Television, DVD, satellite connection etc for running a Community Development Centre) An Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre With ICT training facilities for the youth, Internet facility, computer printing and photocopying

  7. Energy Kiosk CPC Business Model 3 kerosene lamps/household (common) to be replaced by high efficient, rechargeable LED lamps. A typical Kiosk or CPC with 10-20-30 kW (or more) of Hybrid RE based power Serves 1000 -3000 households/5000-15000 population LED lamps need recharging once a week Cost for set up: Around $25,000 -$ 150,000 / hybrid energy kiosk ( depends on how much power needed) 500-1000 mobiles for 2000 homes; Re-charge in 3 days

Milking the Rhino • Milking the Rhino is a documentary that explores the complex relationships between people and wildlife in sub-Saharan Africa • Students will develop appropriate, innovative and sustainable solutions to empower indigenous communities • Student teams of one-four students are invited to prepare three-minute video pitches for the competition • Address any general or specific problem related to the  indigenous peoples' livelihoods, including wildlife and natural resource management, access to income, famine, gender inequity, human rights and ethics • Video pitches will be rated on: • the teams' understanding of the context and the problem • the quality of their solution with specific emphasis on innovation • economic sustainability and potential for large-scale impact • the quality of their video pitch.
