  1. Mauna Kea Site Testing Mark Chun (UH-IfA), Jake Jacobson, Alan Hatakeyama (Gemini)

  2. DIMM Project Status • Hired Jake Jacobson • Funded by NIO, CELT, IfA • Supported by Gemini and CFHT • Trained and in normal operating mode • Improvements to packaging and s/w

  3. Cross Calibration • GSM Run (Nov/Dec) • Only two nights of useful DIMM data (manpower, winds) • 1st night : bad seeing, agreement between DIMM/GSM

  4. 16 November 2001

  5. Cross Calibration • GSM Run (Nov/Dec) • Only two nights of useful DIMM data (manpower, winds) • 1st night : bad seeing, agreement between DIMM/GSM • 2nd night : better seeing, DIMM/GSM disagree • Star flux drops by factor of ten

  6. 17 November 2001

  7. Cross Calibration • GSM Run (Nov/Dec) • Only two nights of useful DIMM data (manpower, winds) • 1st night : bad seeing, agreement between DIMM/GSM • 2nd night : better seeing, DIMM/GSM disagree • Star flux drops by factor of ten • DIMMs together at CFHT Weather Tower • Jake Training

  8. Cross Calibration Results

  9. MK Plan • Mode of operation: Semi-automatic • Jake sets up DIMMs at twilight • One at 13N, One at CFHT Weather tower • Manually selects and points telescope to target • Pickup in East HA~-1 to -1.5 • Limit to brighter than V<2. • Telescope/DIMM S/W guides for ~2-3 hours • Jake then changes stars for both DIMMs

  10. MK Plan • Goal : 50% of “useful” nights ~ 140 nights • Funded for 200+ nights • Month CFH 13N 88“ HPQ1 42 24 12 6Q2 40 28 12 0Q3 40 40 0 0Q4 38 38 0 0Total 160 130 24 6

  11. Planned Distribution of Tests 13N CFH UH 88”

  12. Jake’s Efficiency • WEATHER 20 • WASTED 1 • MISSED 9 • OFF/WKEND 13 • TRAINING 7 • ENGR 2 • GOOD DATA 13 • TOTAL 65 nights Jake ~ 50%

  13. 13N & CFH: Histogram

  14. 13N & CFH: Comparison

  15. 13N & CFH: Wind Effects

  16. Set up time is improving… • Concern is now lifetime of parts • Failure of hand controller • Occasional failure of one laptop • One telescope AZ drive failing?? • Plan to purchase • Spares of all components • GPS units • New Eyepieces • Still need a ~5m tower for equipment

  17. DIMM Near-Future tasks • Subaru • Comparison at Subaru this week • Add occasional additional data points about the summit • Subaru DIMMs are run a few nights per month • G-SCIDAR + possibly several other experiments in October & December on MK

  18. G-SCIDAR at UH88” Oct/Dec • Goals • Obtain full turbulence/wind profiles for MK • AOS on MK, ELT on MK • Add to Classical SCIDAR data from late 80s • Introduce MK Community to other site monitoring instruments • MASS, GSM? • Test ground/boundary layer strength and distribution • Balloons or kite • Provide CN2(h) for AOS runs on Keck and Gemini

  19. G-SCIDAR at UH88” Oct/Dec • Groups • UH - IfA, SOEST/DIMMs and UH88” • CELT - Matthias • CTIO - MASS? • UNICE - Aziz Ziad & Jean Vernin /G-SCIDAR • CfAO - Eric Steinbring/AO Calibration • UNH,Air Force - John McHugh/LIDAR, George Jumper/Balloons/Kite • Gemini/Keck? – Ellerbroek/Altair, Winzinowich/KAO? • Status • Telescope set, Only G-SCIDAR funded
