  1. Bill of Rights • Bill of Rights: 1st 10 Amendments - Ratified in 1791 - Reflects the principle of “Limited Government”.

  2. Bill of Rights • First Amendment: Allows for 5 basic freedoms: • Freedom: - Of Religion - Of Speech - Of the Press - Of Assembly - To Petition the Government

  3. Bill of Rights • 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Amendments help protect Americans from abuses of power by Gov’t. officials. • Second Amendment: Protects the right to serve in a state militia and to bear arms. (p.313)

  4. Bill of Rights • Third Amendment: Limits the government’s power to house soldiers in anyone’s home. • Fourth Amendment: Protects against Unreasonable Search and Seizures.

  5. Bill of Rights • Fifth Amendment: Protects the rights of a person accused of a crime. No one shall be denied life, liberty, or property without due process of law. - Indictment, double jeopardy, eminent domain

  6. Bill of Rights • Sixth Amendment: The right to trial by jury and to be represented by a lawyer. • Seventh Amendment: Guarantees the right to a jury trial in civil cases. ($20+)

  7. Bill of Rights • Eight Amendment: Prohibits excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment. • Ninth Amendment: Specifies that the rights listed are not the only rights of the people.

  8. Bill of Rights • Tenth Amendment: Powers not specifically assigned to Nat’l Gov’t. belong to the states or to the people.
