  3. The objective ... is to develop the techniques to accelerate particles in a new type of accelerator. This accelerator is called EMMA.

  4. The project Our project is to develop the techniques to use EMMA. EMMA, Daresbury

  5. The risks We are up against an untested technology. We are competing against countries that are years ahead.

  6. Can we do it? Much of the expertise in the UK in circular accelerators lives in the Cockcroft Institute – in the Liverpool accelerator physics group.

  7. The STFC mission … medicine, energy, science, industry …

  8. Conclusion How much does it cost to cure cancer patients, understand the universe, and solve our energy problem?
