  1. Skin Specialist in Chennai ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Psoriasis and How to Treat it Psoriasis is a chronic condition where there is scaling on the skin’s surface. There is a rapid build-up of skin cells which leads to inflammation and redness around the scales. Psoriatic scales are typically whitish-silver and develop in thick, red patches. Sometimes these patches will crack and bleed. So what exactly happens in Psoriasis? Normally, our skin cells grow deep in the skin and slowly rise to the surface and eventually they fall off. A skin cell usually has a life cycle of one month. In people with psoriasis, skin cells instead of the life cycle of a month have a production cycle of few days and because of the constant growth of new skin cells, the earlier ones don’t have time to fall off. This rapid overproduction leads to the build-up of skin cells. These scales may develop anywhere on the body such as elbows, knees, joints, hands, feet, neck, scalp and even on the face. Some types of psoriasis affects the nails, mouth and the area around the genitals.

  2. What are the symptoms? There are five different types of psoriasis and your skin specialist in Chennaican tell you more about them. The symptoms differ from person to person depending on the type of psoriasis. The most common symptoms include: red, raised, inflamed patches of skin painful, swollen joints silver-white scales or plaques on the red patches thick pitted nails soreness around patches itching and burning sensations around patches dry skin that may crack and bleed Not every person will experience all of these symptoms. Depending on the type of psoriasis, everyone will experience entirely different symptoms. Treatment options for psoriasis Psoriasis treatments fall into three categories: topical treatments, systemic medications, and light therapy. Topical treatments Creams and ointments applied directly to the skin can be helpful for reducing mild to moderate psoriasis. Topical psoriasis treatments include: topical corticosteroids topical retinoid anthralin vitamin D analogues salicylic acid moisturizer Systemic medications This medication is for those who have not responded well to other treatment types. They may need to use oral or injected medications. A word of caution: Many of these medicines have severe side effects, so doctors usually prescribe them for short periods of time.

  3. The medications include: methotrexate retinoid biologics cyclosporine Light therapy Using ultraviolet or natural light, the overactive white blood cells that are attacking the healthy skin cells are killed. Both UVA and UVB light can help in cases of mild to moderate psoriasis. A combination of treatments is helpful in case of people who suffer from moderate to severe psoriasis. Some people may need to use the same treatment for the rest of their lives while others may need to need to change treatments if the skin stops responding.
