  2. The Cell Theory • All living things are made up of cells • Cells only arise from pre-existing cells. • The cell is the basic unit of life.

  3. Controls movements into and out of the cell (regulator) Is semi-permeable, or selectively permeable Helps maintain the shape of the cell. The Cell Membrane

  4. Jelly-like material Carries organelles Gives the cell its shape Cytoplasm

  5. Serves as the control center of the cell Nucleolus- Contains RNA The Nucleus and The Nucleolus

  6. Mitochondria • Power House of The Cell. • These organelles are more plentiful in active cells

  7. Endoplasmic Reticulum • Transports materials throughout the cell. • Rough ER contains Ribosome's.

  8. Grain like Structures Sites of protein synthesis (makes protein) Ribosome's

  9. Packages and secretes the proteins made by the ribosome's. Look like stacks of pancakes. Golgi Bodies

  10. Powerful chemicals that break things down. Lysosomes

  11. Store food and water. Are much larger in plant cells. Vacuoles

  12. Two main type of cells: Prokaryote No nucleus Eukaryote With nucleus

  13. Have no formed nucleus Disorganized Most unicellular Prokaryote

  15. Eukaryote • Have a Nucleus • Have cell membrane bound organelles • Are very organized. • Can be singular or multi-cellular. • Have these other organelles; nuclei, mitochondrion, lysosome, golgi apparatus, ribosomes

  16. Plant Cells Two main differences from animal cells: • Cell wall - a tough, usually flexible but fairly rigid layer that surrounds a cell 2. Chloroplasts - organelles found in plant and other eukaryotic organisms that conduct photosynthesis
