  3. The Crust • Solid layer of rock that forms the outer skin (5 – 40 km) • Oceanic Crust (under oceans) and Continental Crust (mountains/land)

  4. Crust Continued • Oceanic crust is made mostly of the rock Basalt • Continental Crust is made mostly of granite. • Oceanic crust is more dense than continental crust which plays a large roll in plate tectonics.

  5. The Mantle • Underneath the Crust • Upper portion (Crust + solid mantle) called the lithosphere • Lower portion (gooey moving rock) called the Asthenosphere. The intense heat creates a soft material that can bend like plastic. Important in Plate tectonics.

  6. Mantle continued • The mantle is nearly 3000 km thick • 870 -2,200 degrees celsius

  7. The Core • 1/3 of the Earth’s mass, size of moon • Two parts • Inner Core • Outer Core • 2,200 to 5,000 degrees Celsius

  8. Outer core • 2250 km wide (2,900 km from surface) • Molten metal • Enormous pressure, behaves like a thick liquid

  9. Inner Core • 1200 km wide (5,150 km from surface) • Dense ball of solid metal • Pressure squeezes together so they cannot spread out and become liquid • Over 5,000 degrees Celsius (could be hotter than the sun)
