  1. After Issus

  2. After the battle of Issus… • Paul artus p. 50 (read) • See workbook p.54-57, on the seige of tyre • The battle of Issus: was successful for alexander because he took on king darius III and beat him • Showed people back in greece and in the rest of persia that he was a successful general. • After this, Alexander went on to the Phonecian cities and was welcomed there as a liberator, so they were happy to be free of Darius III’s control.

  3. Request for Darius’ family to be returned. Darius makes two appeals. • Arrian’s account: that Darius sent a letter to Alexander asking for the return of his family and the Persian ladies. • He offered to treat Alexander as an ally (this is ridiculous, as Alexander has already beaten him and is also a very significant offer) Darius blamed the Persians for starting the war. According to Diodorus: Darius offered ransom and lands which were already taken over by Alexander Arrogant tone of the letter suggests it may have been forged by Alexander Alexander would have re wrote the letter to make Darius seem much worse.

  4. The second request • Alexander rejected Darius’ first request, and demanded to be addressed as ‘King of Asia’ and reinforces this with his actions towards Darius’ family, treating them with respect and calling Darius’ mother, his mother. • Alexander also accused Darius of initiating Philip’s murder and stirring up trouble in Greece. (This was somewhat justified as he paid the Greeks gold to rebel against Alexander and started the rumour that Alexander was _____) • 2nd request for his family, happened while Alexander was fighting in T____. • Darius proposed a ransom of 10, 000 talents in exchange for his family and land • He also proposed Alexander and Darius form an alliance which would be strengthend by the marriage between A_____ and B_____. • Alexander r______ this offer. Saying he did not need Darius’ permission to marry his daughter.
