Vision and mission Dedicated to the vision – not for profit / own vision and staying on track / some independence on donors Voluntary contribution / cost-effectiveness Facilitation of public participation (membership) Nurturing a good reputation and consistency Being neutral / non partisan / independent on politics Own priorities and quality standards CS is the only sector aiming at its own obsolescence (not be needed any more)

  3. Grassroots knowledge Specific expertise Closer to the public – understanding social/grassroots needs (listening to people) Civic responsibility / accountability towards community Focus on long-term processes (institutional memory) Agents of change?

  4. Cross-sectoral cooperation Open to partnership / other CSOs (nationally, internationally), other sectors, local government… Healthy competition is good but cooperation/synergy is better Respect for diversity Good donorship / gate to donors Public-private partnership Facilitating communication to increase ownership

  5. Flexibility Flexibility and rapid reaction Flexible in implementation / use lessons learned Ready to take risk New perspectives – new ideas Ready to re-check priorities / open for innovations Frank communication / self-criticism

  6. Professionalism Democracy within CSOs / clear procedures Be realistic in visions / and fair and honest on results Diversity of sources Own professionalism / permanent capacity building Partnership / coalitions / networking Continuous trust building Self-confidence in communication Be pro-active (own agenda, solutions, language…)

Impact Focus on social profit (need to measure impact) Making good use of monitoring and evaluation Learning from mistakes / evaluations – to be sure why Sharing experience / best practices Be open to criticism Take time for systematic measuring/evaluation Be realistic in indicators Considering cost-effectiveness / use of evaluations
