  5. Teaching and Learning in the second decade of the 21st Century • Teachers today face: • Increasingly diverse classrooms, both culturally and linguistically • Declining student enthusiasm for school • Developing new skills or modifying existing skills to meet the needs of the students

  6. 3 Principles of Learning to Guide 21st Century Learning • Students: • Come with prior understandings and experiences, teachers must address and build upon this prior knowledge • Must have factual and conceptual knowledge to develop a deeper understanding and to effectively retrieve and apply knowledge in real-world contexts • Learn more effectively when they are aware of how they learn and know how to monitor and reflect on their learning
