  2. Spelling Ysgol Uwchradd Casnewydd Newport High School, enriching lives through writing, reading and oracy

  3. Spelling Strategies • Copy out the word repeatedly until you can write it correctly without thinking about it. • Copy out a misspelt word three times and attempt to learn it, using the system below: Look – Think - Cover – Say – Write - Check; • Look at the new word and visualise how it is written. • Think about how can you break it in to smaller parts? • Do any parts remind you of familiar words? • Cover the word. Say it to yourself. • Try saying it slowly in syllables or chunks of familiar smaller words. • Write it down whilst the word is covered. • Check to see if you were right. • Repeat, focussing on your mistakes.

  4. Mnemonics Try making up your own mnemonics to help you remember how to spell a word: • An island island with water all round it. • I’ll be your fri(end) to the end. • Never eat cake eat salmon sandwiches and remain young = necessary

  5. More mnemonics • Geography: George Edwards's Old Grandma Rode APig Home Yesterday. • Arithmetic: ARat In The House May Eat The Ice Cream. • A principal at a school is your pal, and a principle you believe or follow is a rule.

  6. Making words plural • If there is a vowel before the final Y of a word, you just add S E.G. Storey becomes storeys • If there is a consonant before the final Y of a word, change the Y into i and add es. E.G. Story becomes stories The tower is six storeys high. I read three stories.

  7. Try these • Monkey Monkeys • Country Countries • Boy Boys • Fly Flies • Ruby Rubies • Jelly Jellies • Key Keys • Dolly Dollies • Teddy Teddies • Trolley Trollies
