  2. Objective • Today, you will read an article on Common Core Standards and write a summary on how to support these standards in your class.

Common Core Standards • Rigorous, research-based standards for English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12. • Literacy standards for History/Science/Technical Subjects • Designed to prepare the nation’s students with the knowledge and skills needed for success in college and the workforce. • Internationally benchmarked to ensure that students will be globally competitive. • A collaborative effort that builds on the best of current state standards.

Common Core Significant Milestones November 2012: Revised ELD & Science standards available Spring 2014: Field testing of summative assessments August 2, 2010: SBE adopts Common Core State Standards in English & Math Spring 2013: Pilot testing of summative assessments Spring 2015: Administer operational summative assessment November 1, 2012: Assessment Transition Plan due to State Legislature * pending SBE action

  5. Common Core Anchor StandardsAnchor Standards are the foundational knowledge from which all other learning develops.

Anchor Standards Focus on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) Students: • Demonstrate independence • Build strong content knowledge • Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline • Comprehend as well as critique • Value evidence • Use technology and digital media strategically and capably • Come to understand other perspectives and cultures

Anchor Standards HOTS Reading • You will read the front page of the article. • One partner reads, the other highlights. • At the end of each paragraph, switch roles. • Decide on a sentence from the article that both of you found interesting. • One partner will provide the sentence, the other will explain why the sentence is important.

Read Article • Team 1 – Reads Page 41 - Writing • Team 2 – Reads Page 48 – Speaking & Listening • Team 3 – Reads Page 51 – Language • Read the article independently and highlight the words you find interesting. • With your partner, create a 3 to 5 sentence summary answering the following question: -What are some ways you can support the Anchor Standards in your class? (Make sure to use the terms you highlighted)
