    • recruit teachers from classes that coordinate with possible projects (offer mini-grants)

    • Working with community organizations and feeder schools, facilitate all aspects of all projects in that community

  • Cascade of Training:

    • District Training for 4 high school YC- SLHS

    • Each YC will train respective YC class (1 day)

    • Each YC will conduct SL workshops for classes outside of the YC that are participating in a project

  • Peer Mediation: By December all 6 Youth Councils will be trained

    • 9 workshops per school that includes history, philosophy, nature of conflict, causes, referral process, set up of mediation room, 6 step process, writing scenarios, forms, marketing, etc.)

  • District-wide evaluation based on 21st Century Skills:

    • About 70% of the service-learning in Lake County involves older students tutoring younger students.

    • The core curriculum used in Lake County for middle and high school Youth Council schools are the 21st Century skills (See 21st Century Skills table)

    • When comparing Pre & Post test results for 21st Century Skill competency, we found that the percentage of competency increased by an average of 30 points (if interested, a full report is available)

    • In general, 80 % of Youth Council members believed they were capable of performing each of the 21st Century skills at a good or excellent level

Each of 6 Service-Learning Youth Council Schools will create high quality literacy products to be used as part of the Youth Council tutoring library. The following are learning objectives:

  • Increase reading, writing and communication skills

  • Develop character traits

  • Develop 21st Century Skills

  • 6 Elementary Feeder Schools- Recipient of service

  • 6 Service-Learning Youth Councils- Monthly elementary feeder school visits to teach character education activities. Facilitate all administrative aspects of project to learn 21st Century Skills and develop positive character traits

  • Intensive Reading or English : Write a storybook based on character. Increase reading, writing and communication skills

  • Art and/or Digital/Commercial Design: Illustrate the storybook. Increase communication and illustration skills

  • Gain an operational knowledge of the Lake County Service-Learning Youth Council responsibilities and how those responsibilities relate to your role as a service-learning teacher

  • Understand how to apply the service-learning stages to the Lake County Service-Learning Character Education project.

  • Oct. 3rd: CMS presented a PP and skit on their projects including the SI project and distributed a survey to CRES teachers

    • Surveys are currently under review for project consideration & scheduling


Middle schools oak park middle school

Middle SchoolsOak Park Middle School

  • YC class was scheduled 7th period which is after Leesburg Elementary School students are dismissed.

  • YC members are rotating 3 times: before, and after school on Wednesday and Fridays at their Extended Day Program as part of a Lake County Literacy grant involving an advanced reading project. Plans to start the character education project hopefully will begin by the end of October.

    • 220 10 YC classes @ 70 hours each (15,400 hrs.)

    • 350 (4 classes of art @ 25 = 100); reading (6 classes of 25 = 150) 20 hrs. each = 7,000 hrs.

    • 306 (12 mini-grants @ 25 students each) 20 hrs. each =6120

      Estimated service hours = 22,400 (does not count mini-grants hours)

  • Recipients = 4,470

    • 1400 P-K Elementary (25 to 30 % of teachers)

    • 1350 middle schools

    • 1550 high school

    • 170 other adults
