Topic: Blood Typing What is the ABO system?
Genetics of Blood Typing • Multiple alleles- one gene with more than 2 allele forms • AA or Ai = type A • BB or Bi = type B • AB= type AB (codominance) • ii = type 0
What happens if you mix the wrong blood types? • The antibodies made will stick to the red blood cells and cause clumping. • The clumping is called agglutination.
The Rh Factor • Humans may have a second antigen present on red blood cells. • Most likely caused by dominant gene • If you have it , you are Rh (+) • If you don’t have it, you are Rh (-)
Rh disease • Happens when mom is Rh- and dad is Rh+ • If baby is Rh+, mom will produce Rh antibodies. • First baby may be OK, but second???? • Treatment: Drug called Rhogam.
