  2. TYPES OF EMERGENCIES In the Beginning… WEATHER POWER OUTAGE ILLNESS/DISABILITY DEATH OF PARTNER DISEASE OUTBREAK NATIONAL DISASTER

WEATHER TYPES OF WEATHER: • FIRE FROM LIGHTENING, FLOODING, TORNADOS, EXTREME HEAT, EXCESSIVE SNOW, EARTHQUAKES, HURRICANES HAVE AN EVACUATION PLAN • HAVE A PHONE TREE TO CALL FOR HELP • RESIDENCE AND CELL PHONE NUMBERS • DETERMINE WHERE ANIMALS WILL GO • WHO CAN TAKE HOW MANY ANIMALS • WHICH TYPE CAN THEY TAKE • MALES ONLY, FEMALES ONLY, ETC. • INCLUDING GUARDIAN DOGS, BARN CATS, ETC. • DETERMINE WHICH ANIMALS SHOULD GO FIRST • PREGNANT, MOST EXPENSIVE, NON-INSURED, CUSTOMERS • GATHER UP MEDICATIONS FOR ANIMALS UNDER TREATMENT • DON’T SPEND TIME TRYING TO HALTER ALL THE ANIMALS

WEATHER - THE PLAN CONTINUED • BE SURE YOUR TRAILER IS ALWAYS ACCESSIBLE • NOT BURIED IN A SNOW DRIFT • TRAILER SHOULD BE IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION • TIRES INFLATED • KNOW WHERE THE TRAILER KEYS ARE IF NEEDED • HITCH WHERE IT CAN BE FOUND • PRACTICE HITCHING BEFORE AN EMERGENCY • PRACTICE BACKING UP TO THE BARN AHEAD OF TIME • MAKE SURE THE TRAILER ISN’T USED FOR STORAGE • HAVE YOUR ADDRESS POSTED NEAR THE PHONE • IF YOUR NOT THERE AND SOMEONE ELSE HAS TO CALL FOR HELP, THEY MAY NOT KNOW YOUR ADDRESS • FIRE EXTINGUISHERS • HAVE THE RIGHT TYPE • MAKE SURE THEY HAVR NOT EXPIRED

WEATHER - THE PLAN CONTINUED • HAVE A BACK UP PLAN IF IT’S TOO LATE TO LEAVE • TURN THEM LOOSE • SHUT IN CORRAL • SHUT IN BARN • MOVE TO ANOTHER LOCATION ON PROPERTY • IF YOU HAVE A TRACTOR, MAKE A FIRE LINE AROUND THE PERIMETER • REMEMBER WHEN DOING FENCING, THINK ABOUT HOW EMERGENCY VEHICLES NEED TO NAVIGATE

OTHER TYPES OF EMERGENCIES • POWER OUTAGE • Will you still be able to access water? • Do you have automatic waterers/well? • Will you have adequate lighting in barn area for after dark care? • Head Lamps • Hand Held Spotlights • Should you purchase a generator? NOTE: Utility companies may put you at the top of their reactivation list if you have a family member on electrical medical equipment (ex: oxygen). They also told us that having livestock moved us up on the list during an extendedpower outage once they were aware.

  8. ILLNESS/DISABILITY • KNOW WHO YOU CAN CALL FOR HELP FAMILY, FRIENDS, OTHER BREEDERS • ASK FOR HELP • HAVE BOTH SHORT/LONG TERM PLAN OUTSIDE HELP/SELL ANIMALS • MAKE SURE YOUR FAMILY KNOWS YOUR WISHES SHOULD YOUR SITUATION WORSEN

  9. DEATH OF A SPOUSE/PARTNER • HAVE A PLAN • DISCUSS THE POSSIBILITY BEFORE IT HAPPENS • WILL YOU BE ABLE TO CONTINUE IN SAME CAPACITY? • WILL YOU NEED TO DOWNSIZE? • WHO’S DREAM WAS IT? • CONTINUE OR SELL ALL? • KNOW PASSWORDS FOR ON-LINES ACCOUNTS

  10. DEATH OF A SPOUSE - continued • KNOW WHERE THINGS ARE KEPT • KNOW HOW TO DO THEIR JOB-ON THE RANCH • WHAT IF YOU BOTH PASS AT THE SAME TIME? DOES YOUR FAMILY KNOW HOW TO HANDLE YOUR OPERATION? • IS THERE A FAMILY MEMBER WHO WOULD WANT TO CONTINUE YOUR OPERATION? • IF NOT, DO THEY KNOW THE VALUE OF YOUR BUSINESS AND ANIMALS? • DO THEY KNOW WHERE THEY CAN DISPERSE OR WHERE TO GET HELP?

  11. DISEASE/OUTBREAK • Have a Plan - Access on-line sites for most current info-USDA • Does national organization have info.? • Does regional affiliate have info.? • Talk to your local vet • Might be a good idea to quarantine your facility • No movement of animals in/out

NATIONAL DISASTER • Terrorism such as 911 • Communication Problems • Access to Money • Stores open to purchase hay, etc. • Always have surplus of feed-just in case • Volcanic Ash • Air Quality • Forage Issues • Visibility • Surplus of Feed • Bioterrorism • Bioterrorism • Feed or Water Contamination • Surplus of Feed

After Animals Are Handled, Don’t Forget These Important Things • Important Documents • Wills, Birth Certificates, Passports, Insurance Papers, Bank Documents, Tax Records, Drivers License, ARI/ILR Certificates, Health Records (animals and human), Social Security Card • Medications, Glasses, Hearing Aids, Cell Phones and Charger • Computer Hard Drive, Back-Up Drives, Disks • Family Keepsakes, Photos, Jewelry • Turn Off Gas to House
