  3. Information • OMAM the Essay - major grade - Rough Draft Due tomorrow • Lunch passes to the library - available for lunch period only • After School hours - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday • OMAM Study Guides - currently at -20 points for being late

  4. Rift – (n.) a split, break, breach Synonyms – crack, fissure, gap, cleft Antonyms – reconciliation

  5. Semblance– (n.) a likeness; an outward appearance; an apparition Synonyms - appearance, air, aura, facade Antonyms – contrast, total lack, dissimilarity

  7. Step 2: Rough Draft • Use information from the prewrite - these details should be organized • Sloppy Copy - this should NOT look like the final draft - filled with errors • Goal - place thoughts on paper - semblance of organization

  8. Step 2: Rough Draft • 1st Paragraph…. OH MY GOD HOW DO I START? - must introduce the paper and topic - provide direction for your reader - thesis statement (topic sentence for essay) • Begin by summarizing the book - this should be brief and lack specific details - final sentence of the paragraph will be the thesis statement

Thesis Examples • George was justified in killing Lennie because it protected him from being tortured, prevented Lennie from killing others, and allowed George to live his life. • George was not justified in killing Lennie because it was murder, Lennie was his friend, and he promised Lennie’s Aunt Clara he would care for him. • People with power or strength prey on the weaknesses of others, Of Mice and Men provides many examples of how this occurs in society.

  10. Thesis Statement • Thesis - the main point of your paper - topic sentence for the essay - very specific • Includes - three reasons (supporting ideas) for essay - states your point clearly…

  11. Introduction Paragraph • Introduce the book, summarize the main ideas • Introduce the thesis, point of your paper - provide direction for your reader
