  1. Governor School Summer Residential Program 2013

  2. What is Summer Residential Governor School? Provides gifted high school juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; mathematics, science, and technology; life science and medicine; or through mentorships in marine science or engineering. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer. Involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. Mentorships - Work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals.

Three Types of Applications Academic Application – complete this application for the Agriculture program, the Humanities program, and the Math, Science, and Technology program Mentorship Application – complete this application for the Life Sciences and Medicine program and the NASA/NIA and Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) programs Visual and Performing Arts Application – complete this application for all of the subcategories of the Visual and Performing Arts program (dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual arts, and vocal music)

  4. Eligibility Criteria • Strong Academic Standing • Two forms of Aptitude tests • Letter of recommendation from a teacher • A student must be neither a current applicant to a 2013 Governor's Foreign Language Academy or other Summer Residential Governor’s School, nor a former participant in these programs. A student may attend only one Foreign Language Academy or Summer Residential Governor’s School program during his or her high school career. • A student must be genuinely interested in attending the Governor's School and have the emotional maturity, stability, and self-discipline to live away from home for an extended period. • Once selected, a student MUST attend Governor School.

VPA Governor School Radford University – June 24 – July 21 for the 2012 Summer Residential Governor's School for Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts. http://www.radford.edu/content/gov-school/home.html In order to receive a Governor’s School certificate, students are required to be in attendance from the opening ceremony on June 24 through the closing ceremony on July 21.   7. VPA – Adjudication • Limited Allotment per School • If nominated for any of the VPA category – Students will go through adjudication process. • 2013 Adjudication Site: • Shenandoah University – January 12, 2013 • Failure to show up for adjudication – Students will be responsible to pay $25 cancellation fee.

Academic Programs & Dates • Agriculture (AG) Virginia Tech • (4 weeks) June 30 – July 27, 2013 Program begins at 2 p.m. • Humanities (HUM) Radford University • (4 weeks) June 23 – July 20, 2013 Program begins at 1 p.m. • Life Sciences and Medicine (LSM) Virginia Commonwealth University • (4 weeks) June 30 – July 26, 2013 Program begins at 12 p.m. • Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) Lynchburg College • (4 weeks) June 30 – July 27, 2013 Program begins at 2 p.m. • NASA/NIA Mentorship (NASA/NIA) Christopher Newport University • (4 weeks) June 30 – July 27, 2013 Program begins at 3 p.m • Virginia Institute of Marine Science Mentorship (VIMS) Christopher Newport University • (4 weeks) June 30 – July 27, 2013 Program begins at 3 p.m • Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Radford University • (4 weeks) June 23 – July 20, 2013 Program begins at 1 p.m.

  10. Application Process • All application MUST be completed electronically. Original Signatures are Required. • Print Name on Top of EACH page • Pages are numbered correctly & In correct order • Letter of References MUST have original signature. • Teachers are Required to use online reference form • All forms can be found at the following website: • http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/governors_school_programs/summer_residential/index.shtml

Application Continue • Complete ALL Information • Relevant activities, training, experiences, and honors • Essay/VPA Statement of Interest • Applicant & Parent/Guardian Assurances • Teacher Recommendation: • Narrative/Reference should be on school letterhead • Student’s name MUST be displayed on top • Original signature • Must use online fillable form

Deadlines • All interested students MUST notify Ms. Jamil by October 19, 2012 – No late-comers will be considered! • All VPA interested students – Please see your performing arts teacher • All nominees will be requested to submit page 1 of application by October 26, 2012 • VPA Application Due – November 30, 2012 (Only applicable to nominees sent forward for adjudication) • Academic & Mentorship Application Deadline – November 30, 2012 – No Exceptions!
