  2. Agenda 11/9/09 • Formula worksheet • Notes on balancing equations Learning Goal: • Be able to read and understand the components in a chemical formula • Balance equations & apply that to the conservation laws

  3. Conservation Laws • Mass/Matter /Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, they can only be rearranged. Mass of Wood + fire = mass of ashes, smoke, etc

  4. What does this mean? • The sum of the reactants must equal the sum of the products in a chemical reaction • Is this always true? • Chemical equations must be balanced to demonstrate the law of conservation of matter.

  5. Balancing an Equation • Use coefficients, which are whole numbers in front of a formula that balances the number of atoms in the reaction • Never change the SUBSCRIPTS! • The total # of each type of atom on the reactants side must equal the total # of each type of atom on the products side.

  6. Steps for Balancing Steps #1 & 2: NaCl + MgO  Na2O + MgCl2 Na = 1 Na = 2 Cl = 1 Cl = 2 Mg = 1 Mg = 1 O = 1 O = 1
