  3. Agenda

  4. What is System Center?

  5. What is System Center? • System Center solutions help IT pros manage the physical and virtual information technology (IT) environments across data centers, client computers, and devices. • System Center currently provides licensing for the following offerings: • Enterprise • Midmarket • System Center Essentials • System Center Virtual Machine Manager Workgroup Edition

  6. Common Licensing Concepts: Operating System Environment

  7. Operating System Environments Virtual Operating System Environment Physical Operating System Environment • Operating system environments are what you would think of when you think of a machine running an operating system like Windows, Linux, or Unix, whether those environments exist as one physical machine or a device with several virtual operating systems.

  8. Common Licensing Concepts: Proc, Socket, Core and Server

  9. Proc and Socket in relation to System Center Licensing • Proc (or Processor or CPU): The brains of the computer. The CPU is where most calculations in a device take place. • Socket: A receptacle for a processor/CPU or other hardware component. • Because each proc requires a socket, people often use the terms interchangeably.

  10. Core in relation to System Center Licensing • Core: The part of the processor that does the work, which makes each processor unique. • Often confused with procs or processors, a system can have a different number of cores than processors • System Center licensing is by server, by user, by OSE, and/or by processor, depending on the type of license. • System Center products are never licensed by cores. Example: One processor, two cores

  11. Server in Relation to System Center Licensing • Server: A computer or device on a network that manages network resources. • Examples • A file server is a computer and storage device dedicated to storing files. Any user on the network can store files on the server. • A print server is a computer that manages one or more printers • A network server is a computer that manages network traffic • A database server is a computer system that processes database queries

  12. Are Licenses Always Required?

  13. When you need a license If the device is being managed, backed up, or configured by a System Center product, or if the device is managing, backing up, or configuring other devices using a System Center product, it is very likely that it requires a license. General Guideline:

  14. When you don’t need a license • Additional Software • Some System Center products come with additional software for which an additional license is not required • To determine if a license is required for additional software, review the Product User Rights (PUR) • Other Conditions (directly per the PUR) • You do not need a management license for • any of your Operating System Environments (OSEs) running instances of the server software on your licensed servers, • any of your OSEs in which no instances of software are running, or • any of your devices functioning only as network infrastructure devices (OSI layer 3 or below), or • any of your devices for which you are exclusively performing out of band management.

  15. Licensing Elements

  16. Licensing Elements • Client Management License • “client ML” • Licenses users or non-server OSEs or • Licenses client operating system environments (OSEs) to be managed by System Center Products • Server Management License • “server ML” • Licenses server OSEs to be managed by System Center products (except for VMM) • Management Server Software License • “Management Server Software License” • Licenses the server device that will manage the other devices (clients and servers) • In summary, to be in compliance for most of the System Center products, the customer needs to acquire: • A Management Server Software License for the server doing the management • Either a client or server ML for the device being managed

  17. Licensing “Triangle” with System Center Product Example Management Server Software License (Licenses the server that manages the clients and/or servers) Server ML Client ML Client ML (Licenses the client being managed) • Server ML • (Licenses the server being managed) .

  18. Types of Management Licenses

  19. Types of Server MLs • There currently are two editions of System Center server MLs • Standard • Enterprise • The following products have standard and enterprise server MLs • Configuration Manager • Operations Manager • Data Protection Manager • Virtual Machine Manager only has an enterprise server ML • How does a customer know what edition of server ML to acquire? • The edition of server ML required depends on whether the managed server is running a ‘basic’ or ‘advanced’ workload.  Please, see the next slide for details.

  20. Server Management Licenses Editions

  21. System Center Suites

  22. System Center Client and Server Suites • Server MLs and Client MLs can each be purchased standalone, or in their own set of suites • Suites are a method of packaging licenses that make commonly used combinations of products • Less expensive • More convenient • Suites currently available for System Center products are • System Center Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE) • System Center Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD) • Core Client Access License (Core CAL) • Enterprise Client Access License (ECAL)

  23. System Center Suites: Server

  24. System Center Server Licensing SC VMM Ent Server ML SC DPM • Ent Server ML SC Config Mgr • Ent Server ML SC OpsMgr • Ent Server ML 1 Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD) Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE) • Standalone Enterprise Server Management Licenses • All sold on a per OSE basis except the VMM Enterprise Server ML, which provides rights to manage any number of OSEs • Available with and without SA 2 • Server Management Suites • Discounted compared to standalone enterprise server management licenses • Only available with SA • Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE), licensed per device, with a limit of 4 OSEs • Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD), licensed per processor, with unlimited OSEs and a 2 processor minimum requirement

  25. System Center Suites: Client

  26. Client Management Licensing Suites Available with System Center Products • Standalone Licenses • All sold on a per OSE or per user basis. • Available with and without SA 1 • Core CAL • Available on a per device and per user basis • Only available with SA • Includes Config Mgr client ML SC DPM Client ML Per OSE or Per User SC ConfigMgr Client ML Per OSE or Per User SC OpsMgr Client ML Per OSE or Per User 2 1 • ECAL • Available on a per device and per user basis • Only available with SA • Includes Ops Manager client ML Core CAL 2 ECAL

  27. Putting it All Together: Examples

  28. XYZ Corp – Configuration Manager • XYZ Corporation has • 100 servers • 500 desktop machines • 3 administration machines which can configure all the servers and clients • XYZ Corporation needs: • 100 System Center Configuration Manager Server MLs • 500 System Center Configuration Manager Client MLs • 3 System Center Configuration Manager Management Server Software Licenses

  29. XYZ Corporation Licensing Management Server Software License 3 100 500 Server ML Client ML Client ML • Server ML .

  34. What is an Operating System Environment? • Per the PUR, an Operating System Environment is • All or part of an operating system instance, or all or part of a virtual (or otherwise emulated) operating system instance which enables separate machine identity (primary computer name or similar unique identifier) or separate administrative rights, and instances of applications, if any, configured to run on the operating system instance or parts identified above.

  35. What kinds of Operating System Environments are there? • Also per the PUR • There are two types of operating system environments: • physical • virtual • A physical operating system environment is configured to run directly on a physical hardware system. • The operating system instance used to run hardware virtualization software (e.g. Microsoft Virtual Server or similar technologies) or to provide hardware virtualization services (e.g. Microsoft virtualization technology or similar technologies) is considered part of the physical operating system environment. • A virtual operating system environment is configured to run on a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system. • A physical hardware system can have either or both of the following: • one physical operating system environment • one or more virtual operating system environments
