  3. Quick Quiz • On a throw-in by A2, the ball passes through the team B basket. Shall team B be awarded a throw-in at the free throw line extended nearer the team B basket? • Must an unsportsmanlike foul always involve contact with an opposing player? • At the beginning of the 3rd period, team A has only four team members entitled to participate. Shall the period begin with only four team A players? • A pass by A3 goes out-of-bounds where it first touches substitute B8. Shall a throw-in be awarded to team A? • A4 fouls B3 after A3’s field goal attempt is still in flight. Both teams are in foul trouble. The field goal attempt is then successful. How should the game proceed?

Court Mechanics Trail’s responsibilities • 2,3 point field goal attempts and if a shot was released before the end of period and 24 second buzzer. • Goaltending and basket interference • Rebounding • Low post –especially weak side • Fouls away from Lead. • Travelling • 24second shot clock • Out of bounds (mid court and your left sideline)

  13. TIME RULES • How many time rules are there in basketball? • 3’s, • 5sec to inbound a ball • 5 sec to shoot a free throw • Closely guarded player • 8sec to cross the ball into the frontcourt • 24 sec to attempt a shot for a field goal

  14. 3 second rule • This is a manual count. • A player shall not remain in the opponents' restricted area for more than three (3) consecutive seconds while his team is in control of a live ball in the frontcourt and the game clock is running. • BUT… You can legally be there for 5 seconds!! X2 • Remember the mindset of the referee!

  15. 5 second RULES • This is manual count. • A player who is holding a live ball on the playing court is closely guarded when an opponent is in an active guarding position at a distance of no more than one (1) m. A closely guarded player must pass, shoot or dribble the ball within five (5) seconds. • A free throw shooter shall Release the ball within five (5) seconds after it is placed at his disposal by the official. (NO SIGNALED COUNT) • The player taking the throw-in shall not take more than five (5) seconds to release the ball.

  16. 8 Second rule • This is a manual count BUT USE THE SHOT CLOCK • Whenever A player gains control of a live ball in his backcourt, On a throw-in, the ball touches or is legally touched by any player in the backcourt and the team of that player taking the throw-in remains in control of the ball in its backcourt, that team must cause the ball to go into its frontcourt within eight (8) seconds.

  18. 24 Second rule • This is a mechanical count • Whenever A player gains control of a live ball on the playing court, OR On a throw-in, the ball touches or is legally touched by any player on the playing court and the team of that player taking the throw-in remains in control of the ball, • that team must attempt a shot for a field goal within twenty-four (24) seconds.

  19. 24 Second rule • When is the shot clock reset? • Ball inbound in the backcourt for a foul or violation • Game stopped for a VALID reason except by the team in control of the ball. • Deliberately kicked ball! • When is the shot clock reset to 14 • When there is 13 or less seconds left on the clock AND • Foul or violation, • Game stopped for a VALID reason except by the team in control of the ball. • What is acceptable as a shot for a field goal? • Left the hands in time • Hits the ring or goes in • Key points • The buzzer does not stop the game, the whistle does! • The mindset of the referee. Don’t stop the game if the ball goes to the right place and no the team getting control is not disadvantaged

FoulsCharge /block situations • Can I pick up charging foul against a player who is in the air? • YES! • Key points • Defensive player must establish an initial legal guarding position • Defensive player may move sideways or backwards (NOT FORWARDS) in order to maintain his legal guarding position. • Contact must occur on the torso. • WATCH the defensive player.
