Early History of Pentecostalism • Acts 2:1-4 - Pentecost • Glossolalia • Evidence of “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” – “Second Blessing” • Definitive and concrete sign of salvation • Also evidence of this occurring in 1800s • Charles Parham • 1901, Bethel Bible College in Kansas • Azusa Street Revival • 1906 – William Seymour • Thousands sought Baptism in the Spirit (as evidenced by tongues)

Acts 2:1-4 (KJV) • 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. • 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. • 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. • 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  5. Other Significant Practices • Baptism • Believer’s Baptism • Immersion • Communion • Symbolic meal • Worship (In addition to tongues) • Prophesying, healings, exorcisms, hand-clapping, shouting, “slain in the Spirit” • Free worship, often involves an altar call, music, and sermon

  6. Rituals • Communion – 4 or 5 times a year • Focus on fellowship • Marriage • Takes one of 3 forms • Funeral • Looked at as a celebration of a person’s life, rather than in mourning

Rituals (cont.) • Sins should be confessed, often encouraged to meet with the Pastor • Pastor will pray a Prayer of Restoration with them • For the sick • Anointing with oil occurs • Also praying over for healing • Ordination • Takes place Friday evening of the Council for the larger District of Congregations (CATC a part of PAW – Pentecostal Assemblies of the World)

  10. Pentecostalism in Minnesota • Some of the early events preceding Parham’s glossalalia and Azusa had origins in parts of Minnesota • Formally, Pentecostal Movements came to Minnesota immediately following Azusa (1907)

History of Christ Apostolic Temple Church • Founded Sept. 17, 1935 • New assembly begun to combat bigotry from three other congregations • Thirteen people (referred to as “saints”) undertook this mission • Chose to be a part of P.A.W • Elder Alfred Lawrence as the first pastor • August 1997, moved into the current church home
