  1. A River Study Focusing On River Processes At DúnnaRí By Chloe McKenna

  2. Aims • To investigate fluvial processes at two sites and compare and contrast them.

  3. Team Members • Chloe • Ailbhe • Caroline • Anna

  4. Equipment • Rubber gloves • Wellies • Pen and paper • Clip board • Map • Results sheets • Powerscale of roundness chart • Stop watch • Tennis balls • Metre stick • Measuring stick

  5. Objectives • To measure width and depth and calculate CSA ( cross sectional area ) • To measure velocity • To check bedload, shape and size • To observe both sites and take field notes • Draw sketches

  6. Preparation • To revise chapter on o.s maps • Practice drawing map sketches • Practice drawing sketches of rivers

  7. What we did ? • Cross Section Of River Channel • Using a measuring tape across from waters edge to the other side of river. Record results. • Using a measuring stick measure the depth of the river at 5 places across the river channel. Twice at each bank and once in the middle. Record results.

  8. Velocity/Speed Of The River • 2 members of the group went into the river and stood approximately 5 metres apart. • One person releases a tennis ball into the river while the other member on the bank records the length of time with a stopwatch, it takes the ball to float from one person to the other. • Record the result .This is done twice across the river.

  9. Load, Size & Shape • Using rubber gloves at 4/5 points across the river reach in and pick up the first pebble you touch. • Using chart for roundess of pebbles classify each pebble accordingly. • Record results.
