Why take the numats
Why take the NUMATS

  • This is a program specifically designed for students who score in the 95th percentile on nationally normed tests (NWEA).

  • Gifted students often hit the ceiling on these tests and parents do not get useful information. It is like using a yardstick to measure the height of a child who is already over three feet tall: the measuring instrument is not sufficient. For gifted children, above-grade level testing supplies more information.

Why might a student want to participate in northwestern university s midwest academic talent search
Why might a student want to participate in Northwestern University's Midwest Academic Talent Search?

  • To acquire experience and practice in taking a challenging test.

  • Curiosity about own abilities-How far can I go?

  • Receive information about educational programs for high ability students offered throughout the state, region, and online.

  • Information in the parent tool box will help with course decisions throughout the school years based on NUMATS test scores.

  • Taking tests like the ACT or SAT years in advance increases test-taking confidence and provides content familiarity, usually resulting in even higher scores when the tests are taken for college admissions.

What is the numats testing
What is the NUMATS testing University's Midwest Academic Talent Search?

  • This is for students, scoring 95%+ on the NWEA who are in grades 7-9.

  • Students take the actual 4 hour ACT and SAT tests.

  • Students take these tests with the high school students who are taking them for college entrance.

Should students take more than one test in a year and how often will they need to test
Should students take more than one test in a year and how often will they need to test?

  • It is not necessary to have the student take more than one test a year. You will get similar information from each test, it is mainly about the experience.

  • If these tests are taken yearly, you have a better chance of monitoring their academic growth.

What can be expected once testing is completed
What can be expected once testing is completed? often will they need to test?

  • Students gain a confidence in their abilities and learn what areas to concentrate on.

  • The toolbox can be used to help guide parents to programs that will help challenge and let their child grow.

What is the toolbox
What is the toolbox often will they need to test?

  • This is an account specific to your child that you create when you register.

  • The NUMATS Toolbox lets you view registration information, test scores, and tailored academic recommendations as they become available.

  • You can also access test preparation materials and examine the NUMATS statistical summary, which indicates how your child scores compare to those of other students in the same grade.

  • There are also articles on teaching and parenting gifted students by leaders in the field.

  • Gifted staff has access to all toolbox information which is helpful when working with teachers.

My child scored higher than the average high school student now what
My child scored higher than the average high school student, now what?

  • Students taking these tests are expected to fall in the average range of students. So if they score high, it doesn’t mean that they are ready to graduate.

  • Using the data to find areas of strength will help in the future planning of high school courses, if a subject/grade acceleration should be considered, or what colleges/careers might be appropriate in the future.

How long does it take to get the data
How long does it take to get the data? now what?

  • It takes about 5 weeks from the test date to get scores and data.

  • You will get a toolbox set up once you register and you will find out via email once the information is available in the toolbox.

  • Not only will you get the scores compared to all students who took the test, you will also find out the percentile rank of your child compared to the children in their grade level who also took the test.

What about the courses offered at northwestern
What about the courses offered at Northwestern? now what?

  • There have been students who choose to attend a 6 week course at Northwestern to receive high school credit before they enter high school in areas of math and or science.

  • The course can be costly and you may not wish to send your child out of state for 6 weeks.
