  1. EXCEL A new way of thinking

  2. Purpose of Mandatory Remediation • Create remediation for students earning a grade of “F” in one or more core classes, without losing instructional time. • Create a reward system • Create an alternative discipline plan • Reduction in zeroes

  3. Key Points • NO INSTRUCTIONAL TIME HAS BEEN LOST!! • In a regular school schedule, students who attend a class for 53 minutes a day will spend a total of 265 minutes in each class over the course of the week. With our proposition, students will also spend a total of 265 minutes in each class over the course of the week.

  4. So How Did We Do It? • Decrease time between classes from 5 minutes to 3 minutes on most class changes. Yes….it can be done. We’ve timed it. • Bank minutes to be used on Tues, Thurs and Fri.

  5. Goals • Decrease in number of suspensions for minor infractions. (Keep the students in the classroom) • Decrease in the number of F’s.

  6. The Plan • Students earning an unsatisfactory grade in a core subject will spend at least 30 minutes a week in remediation. • Once the grade is satisfactory, the student is able to participate in the enrichment period during EXCEL.

  7. The Plan • Students who do not turn in assignments may be required to attend remediation until the work is made up (no-zero policy)

  8. The Plan • Priority is given to subjects students will be tested on during GEE/iLEAP that year. • 9th Grade: English/Math • 10th Grade: English/Math • 11th Grade: Science/Social Studies • 12th Grade: English/or whatever subject needed to graduate

  9. Enrichment Period • So…what happens for students who don’t have remediation? • Students have access to TWO areas. • Common’s • Library

  10. Enrichment Period • What can this time be used for? • Its up to them…they earned it! • Socialize with their peers • Homework and Study • Group Projects • Access to the Computer Labs and Library • Meet with teachers for “after-class” questions

  11. Engagement Activities (Friday) • Possible Activities Include: • Pep-rallies for each sport • Awards programs • Culture assemblies (Black History, etc.) • “Fun Activities” • Basketball 3 point tournament • Faculty vs BRPD Volleyball Games • Program Activities • Physics Rocket Launch • Forensics crime scene

  12. What else can be done on Fridays? • Detention for minor infractions throughout the week • Tardies • Dress code violations • Departments may choose someone to skip enrichment and require make-up assignments • 0’s • Make-up Test • Etc.

  13. Added Work (minimal) • Teachers • Organizing activities and remediation • THIS IS NOT AN EXTRA PLANNING PERIOD. • ACTIVELY moving students between classes • NO stopping to “hang out”…if you want to “hang out,” pass all your classes and get 1.5 hours a week!!! • Providing list of students for remediation to department heads once every 3 weeks. • Department Heads • Keeping an accurate and up-to-date list of your department’s remediation assignments once every 3 weeks.

  14. Some Points to think about… • This program satisfy tutoring requirements for extracurricular activities as mandated. (clubs, sports) • Opportunity for club meetings and other necessary activities.

  15. Possible Questions and Answers • “Are 3 minutes enough to change classes?” • You can get anywhere on campus in 1.5 minutes • Teachers don’t allow students to stand around • Encourage ALTERNATE ROUTES! • “What about bathroom congestion?” • Before school, during remediation period, and lunch • Teachers use discretion and common sense

  16. Possible Questions and Answers • “What if I have too many kids in my room?” • Work with your department and other faculty members, enlist peer tutors, be creative!!! • Can I have a student in my class for remediation if it is not my regular day? • YES YOU CAN!
