  1. Endings, open and closed. Endings can be split into two categories open and closed. Open endings being that which does not have a definite end and leaves the results to be speculated or revealed at a later time and closed having a definite ending where the results are shown before theprogram ends.

  2. realist An example of this is the world war two film saving private Ryan, which is about a group of brothers: two of the three are killed in action so the US military decide to pull the third brother (private Ryan) out of action and return him home but this turns out to be a very difficult task as he it quite close to the frontlines, this is a realistic storyline as it uses world war 2 US army infantry in a world war 2 setting. It also in the opening uses a point of view shot of a German machine gunner in a bunker firing upon an opening landing craft. Realist is a narrative that is based on a thing that has happened or could happen such as an invasion (which is a very real thing)

  3. Anti-realist • An anti-realist narrative is a story that is not based around a real event and is created with total non-fiction meaning that it is totally unreal and will never (probably) happen, • An example that uses this type of narrative is resident evil (and all of its sequels) as it has a story line of a very secretive but well known company creating a very destructive virus and unleashing it upon the world and a lone super hero type character is trying to bring down the company.

  4. Non-linear A non-linear narrative structure is not bound by a chronological order and can flash forward and backward whenever it wants (whenever the story wills it) so really any number of events could be occurring and it would hard to tell if they were happening at different times or have already happened or even if the events are happening at the same time through-out. An example of this would be the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the world

  5. Scott Pilgrim vs. the world • This film is definitely a non-linear narrative as it constantly flashes forward and backwards and it is very difficult to keep track of what has happened even to some of the most perceptive who still find it hard to figure out where he is now and what has happened in-between. • Such as a scene where he is talking to a girl and he says she can come to his band practice and then there is a flash forward to him at this practice with the rest of the band telling him off saying that his girlfriend (this girl whom he said could come to his practice as a friendly gesture) is distracting him.

  6. Linear narrative • A linear narrative is when the story has a clear beginning, a climax and an ending an example of this would be the film Equilibrium. As it starts with no problems then a problem develops and the hero tries to sort out that problem then he/she corrects that problem and then the story ends A linear narrative goes through the story as it happens not skipping to the future then back to the present as this would not be linear.

  7. Equilibrium theory • A theory where there starts with an equilibrium and it is then disturbed and there is then a restoration or a new equilibrium created in its place. The 5 steps to Todorovs theory are: 1-A state of equilibrium 2-A disruption to that equilibrium 3-A realisation of that disruption to that equilibrium 4-A restoration attempt of equilibrium 5-Equilibrium is restored or a new equilibrium is created.

  8. The narrative • Equilibrium’s narrative is linear in the way John Preston’s (lead character) re-develops his emotions and starts to question his morality and his governments morality and actions towards its citizens. The Film Equilibrium uses a linear narrative which would greatly benefit the film as using a non-linear narrative would make the film near impossible to understand and follow unlike the linear narrative that goes from the start to the end without flashing forward and only flashing back once which would still follow a linear narrative.

  9. Equilibrium The film Equilibrium is a sterling example of the theory of equilibrium As everything in the film starts in a state of equilibrium (see picture below 1) and this equilibrium is disrupted in the way of thoughts planted in the lead characters mind by a woman (see picture below 2) then realising what his government is doing (realisation of distruption of equilibrium) (see picture below 3) and he starts to over-throw his government which in turn creates a new equilibrium.
