  1. 1) Describe what you see in these pictures. 2) Can you give a name to what you see? New York, USA London, Eng

  2. The previous pictures you saw were examples of an important term: globalization. Today's tasks: 1) Define globalization 2) Distinguish examples from non-examples 3) Correct non-examples of globalization 4) Create our own examples of globalization

  3. GLOBALIZATION IS: 1) An action or a plan of actions 2) which combines people, products, and ideas 3) across country borders Let's see if we can determine a few examples of globalization from non-examples of globalization.

  4. 7-11 began as a small company in Dallas, Texas, but has opened locations in 13 different countries in the world including Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malasysia, Mexico, Philippines, Norway, Sweden, Finland, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States. Recently a Japanese company has bought 7-11. Is the opening of stores in other countries and the purchase of the company by a Japanese company an example of globalization? 1) An action or a plan of actions 2) which combines people, products, and ideas 3) across country borders

  5. In order to win their many NBA championships, the San Antonio Spurs drafted their top three players from non-American countries. Tim Duncan (middle) is from the Virgin Islands. Tony Parker (right) is from France and Manu Ginobili is from Argentinia. Is the drafting of foreign players an example or non-example of globalization? 1) An action or a plan of actions 2) which combines people, products, and ideas 3) across country borders

  6. In 1964, after topping the charts in America, the Beatles land in New York City and play on the Ed Sullivan Show.

  7. Many people from Washington get their tasty maple syrup from New Hampshire. Is getting syrup from New England an example of globalization?

  8. If you have a problem with your Xbox and you call Microsoft for some technical help you will probably reach a call center in an Asian country like India. Is this an example of globalization?

  9. America gives $3 billion dollars a year in foriegn aid to Africa each year. Is this an example of globalization?

  10. NOT GLOBALIZATION Globalization always deals with some kind of international commerce or business. Just one country giving aid to another country is not enough to be an example of globalization. Globalization is a synergy -- A two-way street of exchange What can be changed from the previous scenario to make it an example?

  11. When former Prime Minster of Japan Junichiro Koozumi came to the U.S., President Bush took him to the home of Elvis: Graceland. Globalization?

  12. NOT GLOBALIZATION Globalization always deals with some kind of international commerce or business. Just an induvidual exchange of culture is not enough to be an example of globalization. Globalization is something BIGGER. What can be changed from the previous scenario to make it an example?

  13. NON-EXAMPLES: EXAMPLES: Starbucks hires many BSD students as baristas. Boeing corresponds over the internet with engineers in Amsterdam on wing design. Canadian fisherman get permission to fish in Alaskan waters. American investors discuss new investment strategies. I-Pods are designed in Taiwan, constructed in China, and contain music from many American artists like 50 Cent or Soldja Boi. The Summer Olymics. Students at the International school often correspond with students from Japan. 9 of the top 10 movies in Europe are written, shot, and produced in the U.S. Check the labels on your clothing. Most fabrics are produced in S.E. Asia, but most clothing designers live in New York, London, or Tokyo Many farmers employ laborers who migrate from Mexico and other Central American countries.

  14. Now...YOU create 3 examples of globalization. Have your neighbor check your example to make sure it fits the critical criteria.
