The first mountaineers
The First Mountaineers

  • Henry Philips was the original founder of Philipsburg in 1797.

  • He recruited twelve men to live in Philipsburg. These men could be considered “mountaineers,” as they had to climb up the mountains to reach the town.

  • When the first settlers reached Philipsburg, they found an uninhabited wilderness of dense forest. These pioneers worked extremely hard to clear the land and build Philipsburg’s first buildings.

Hunting Today

  • Hunting season plays a large roll in the live’s of today’s Philipsburg citizens. Although it is no longer for survival, many Philipsburg citizens hunt turkey, bear, deer, and small game. In fact, the first two days of buck season are like holidays around town. Many businesses, as well as the schools, are closed.
