  2. INFLATION • 1973: OPEC oil embargo • Arab-Israeli War • Increase in oil prices • Increase in wages  increased inflation • Increased unemployment • Increase in dual income families

REGIONALISM • Regional disparity: economic gap between the poorer provinces and more prosperous province • Trudeau increased the transfer payments to poorer provinces • Western alienation: the feeling by Western Canada that federal policies favor Central Canada • National Energy Plan (NEP): • Decrease consumption of oil • Protect Canadians rising oil prices • Make Canada more self-sufficient in oil

EXPANDING HORIZONS • Too much US influence on Can. economy? • Trudeau: new trading partners • G’ment tried to strengthen control over econ. and culture • NEP, CRTC, Foreign Investment Review Agency (FIRA) • FIRA: review all major proposed foreign investments to determine whether they serve Canada’s national interests

ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT • Environmental problems rooted in this era • Silent Spring by American Rachel Carson • Groundbreaking • G’ments and businesses resisted attempts to limit pollution • Public concern for the environment increased • Environmental groups established • Awareness increased, legislation changed

  7. Warriors for the environment • Est. in 1970 by BC activists • Draw attention to environmental concerns • 1971: set sail for Amchitka Island, AK • “bear witness “ to US underground nuclear testing

  8. THE FUTURE OF ENERGY • Result of the increased awareness about the environment • New technologies • Solar, wind, tidal energy
