  4. 2005 January 20 GLE • Biggest GLE since 1956 • Very anisotropic • Some stations measured no increase. • Associated with X7 flare • Big, but not huge • Strong and fast CME—producing shock

  7. Science Questions • Climax/Milagro appears to be in the cross hairs. • Spectrum of prompt particles. • Spectrum and interpretation of secondary bump • Interpretation of tail kink.

  8. Outstanding Tasks • Interplanetary conditions? • Solar wind speed (guiding center path) • Turbulence level (rise time) (appears to be low) • CME lift-off time and speed. (Release time) • Hard X-ray onset time. • Signals from other NMs to ‘estimate’ anisotropy. (1/cos ) • Instantaneous cutoff ridigities for Climax/Fenton Hill/MW/Durham

  11. Tasks • Need a muon fitter to study triggered events. • Need correction factors for long periods, i.e., days. • Which way does temperature effect go and how large is it?

  12. Potential Author Issues • Will necessarily rely on input from other investigators. • Can assess how much we can do on our own without new info from outsiders. • Subsequent publications will involve others, but Milagro data (mostly) may be published.
