Research overview • Purpose: To receive the feedback on the usability of the University Internal Homepage • Survey method: Online questionnaire linked from the Internal Homepage News section • Target: The Internal Homepage users ( the University staff and students) • Date: 9th October – 16th October • Number of samples collected:240

  3. Frequency of visit to the homepage • Majority of users visit the Internal Homepage either “every day” or “most days.”

  4. Satisfaction in using the homepage • 51% of users are either “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with the usability of the homepage, while 33% are “very” or “somewhat dissatisfied.” • The satisfaction rate on “the amount” and “the quality of news items” is about 70%. • About 55% are satisfied with “the usefulness” and “the number of links” to other contents. • Although 59% of users are satisfied with “how easy it is to find what they are looking for,” the dissatisfaction rate of 39% is worth to be noted. • 40% of users are either “very” or “somewhat dissatisfied” with “the design and layout,” which seems to have impact on the overall usability.

  5. Usefulness of each section • More than 80% of users find “Campus Updates” and “Main News & Information section” useful. • The number of users who find “Quick Links” useful is also high (76%). • As for “Find drop down menu,” “Featured items,” “Staff info,” “Photo news item,” and “News Archive,” more than half of users do not find these sections useful. • The usefulness of “Social media links” are found to be low, and 33% of users answered “not at all useful.”

  6. Evaluation on the amount of time new items are available • 70% of users think the amount of time news items are available “about the right length,” although 18% think that “Main News & Information section” is “too short.”

  7. Contents on the homepage • 88% of users want to get information about “Upcoming events,” followed by “News about staff and for staff”(81%), “Training and development information”(66%), and “IT and Estates news”(66%).

  8. Summaryand Improvement on the homepage • The following findings could be drawn from the result. • Majority of users visit the Internal Homepage frequently. • Thenews contents are positively evaluated, although some of the sections such as photo news items and featured items are not deemed to be as useful as Campus Updates and Main News & Information. • About half of the users are satisfied with the overall usability of the homepage, but this number could be improved, since it might have been negatively affected by the low evaluation on its layout and design. • While some respondents do not wish for the Internal Homepage to be changed, there are a large number of opinions suggestinghow it can possibly be improved. The below are the examples. • Categorising archived news for the easier searching • Improvement on the search engine.(Changing back to Google engine?) • Effective links to tools, services • Make popular links more prominent. • moodle, webmail , Samis, timetables, maps, HR, About us, academic departments, SU, accommodation • Categorise them instead of just listing them.
