  2. Equality and Diversity • Disability has traditionally been looked on as “special needs” • Focus on solving the individual’s problem • Generally you can’t change the person and it would not be appropriate to try Defining Disability (and other discrimination)

Equality and Diversity • Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) requires “reasonable adjustments” • Changes to the way we structure or do things that are reasonable in order to remove a barrier to the inclusion of a disabled person • Equal opportunities is about removing barriers to the inclusion of people who are “different” from the norm Defining Disability (and other discrimination)

Equality and Diversity • Diversity is about valuing and openly welcoming the inclusion of people who are “different” from the norm • Diversity recognises that people who are different bring important contributions • The positive contribution of disabled people’s life experiences is increasingly recognised Defining Disability (and other discrimination)
