  2. The NBCE The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners was founded in 1963 as other healthcare professionals (osteopaths, podiatrists, dentists, and medical doctors) were forming national boards in their respective professions.

  3. The NBCE • The goal of the founding members was to test members of the chiropractic profession directly, rather than requiring them to take the Basic Science Boards of other health care professions.

  4. The NBCE and the FCLB • Although the NBCE was established as a result of feasibility studies by the FCLB, the NBCE is a testing organization with a distinctly separate mission and organization.

  5. The NBCE and State Boards • NBCE is NOT a licensing agency • State boards relinquish no legal authority • State board members remain actively involved in test production and delivery

NBCE Corporate Composition • Each State names one Delegate and one Alternate Delegate who form the foundation of the organization • Delegates from each District nominate a person to serve as District Director • Assembly of all state delegates votes to accept or reject the nominee EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE BOARD OF DIRECTORS District Directors Directors-At-Large FCLB Appointees NBCE STATE DELEGATES STATE BOARDS

Examinations Offered by the NBCE WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS Part I: Basic Sciences General Anatomy, Spinal Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Pathology, Microbiology and Public Health Part II: Clinical Sciences General Diagnosis, Neuromusculoskeletal Diagnosis, Diagnostic Imaging, Principles of Chiropractic, Chiropractic Practice, and Associated Clinical Sciences Part III: Clinical Competency Exam PRACTICAL EXAMINATION Part IV – Practical Skills Exam

  10. Examination Services Offered by the NBCE • OPTIONAL EXAMS FOR STATE BOARDS • Physiotherapy • Acupuncture • Special Purpose Examination (SPEC) • Ethics and Boundaries (E&B) • ADDITIONAL EXAMS FOR COLLEGES • Chiropractic College Assessment Test(CCAT)

  11. Other NBCE Services THE JOB ANALYSIS • Survey of randomly selected chiropractors • Questionnaire results compiled into report • Describes • “Typical” chiropractor • “Typical” patient • Professional functions, knowledge areas and treatment procedures • Updated report due in early 2005

Use of Job Analysis The Job Analysis of Chiropractic • Provides content basis for Parts III and IV • Ensures content of exams realistically reflects what chiropractors must know to meet minimum competency required by state statutes and to protect the public • Supports profession legislatively: VA chiropractic and chiropractic in military
