  1. draft Proposal for MICE proposal Layout overall edition: Blondel & Kaplan • Executive Summary 1 page • table of contents 1 page • full author list -------!!!!!! 2 pages • responsibility structure 1 page • General motivation (S.Geer & K. Long) • 2. Cooling (Kaplan) • 3. The International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (Blondel, Lombardi, Palmer) • 3.1 Layout and principle • 3.2 Experiments to be performed • 3.3 Expected performance and statistical precision • 3.4 Systematic errors and resulting requirements • 3.5 possible development of the experiment in time 8 pages

  2. 10% cooling of 200 MeV muons requires ~ 20 MV of RF single particle measurements => measurement precision can be as good as D ( e out/e in ) = 10-3 SC Solenoids; Spectrometer, focus pair, compensation coil Liquid H2 absorbers or LiH ? 201 MHz RFcavities T.O.F. III Precise timing T.O.F. I & II Pion /muon ID precise timing Tracking devices: He filled TPC-GEM and/or Sci-Fi tracker Measurement of momentum, angles and position Electron ID Eliminate muons that decay new drawing needed with new magnetic config and matching coils in!

  3. STEP I: STEP II STEP III Solenoid or Bucking? STEP IV solenoid/bucking STEP V solenoid/bucking vary momentum and beta vary absorber thickness vary absorber material STEP VII final results

  4. Pictures explaining the operation of MICE and the quantities to be measured was done with 88 MHz, PATH, no spectro match, etc… -> need actual MICE -> Palmer, (ICOOL) Lombardi(PATH) one of the two is enough ICOOL

  5. spectrometer performance by P. Janot. No noise, inefficiencies, ad hoc fortran code.  do this with ‘official GEANT4’ + Bkg, efficiency, etc.. One detector choice is enough! + simulations in the particle ID (downstream) G-4-MICE

  6. Systematic effects… in cooling: -- need for magnetic measurements was identified (see JM Rey) justification for specs (10-3 measurements?) is missing -- thickness of absorbers (how will this be measured) -- RF field monitoring ? in measurement -- tracking errors, tof systematics… -- others?
