  2. EARLY RULE • Mid 600’s land is conquered by Islam • Most people begin to follow Islam • Christians and Jews continue to follow their own religion

  3. Early Rule (cont.) • For 150 Years Islam rules • Seljuk Turks conquer and rule 400 years • Ottoman Turks then seize control

  4. Ottoman Rule • Ottomans allowed free practice of religion and did not impose Islamic Law • 1700’s rivalry and division grows among various groups. • Ottoman empire begins to weaken by mid 1800’s

  5. World War I • Ottoman Empire was on the losing side in WWI • European powers worked out division of Middle East before WWI was over • Britain wanted to establish a hold in the Middle East

  6. Secret Negotiations • Britain gets Arabs to revolt • Broken Promise

  7. Arabs and Jews • Mid 1940’s Iraq, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon gain independence • Palestine becomes an issue • One country two people groups

  8. Zionist Movement • 1800’s 10 million Jews around the world • Jews were oppressed • Best answer, Return to Palestine • 1882 First immigrants go to Palestine • By 1914 85,000 Jews had settled

  9. TWO PEOPLE, ONE LAND • 1917 British proclaim support for Jewish homeland • Arabs not happy • Jews and Arabs become violent

  10. WWII • Hitler comes to power in 1933 • Nazi Germany persecutes Jews • Jews flee to Palestine • 1939 Jews in Palestine is now 445,000 • Great Britain limits Jews immigrating to Palestine

  11. Creation of Israel • 6 million Jews die in Nazi Germany • Arab league opposes Jewish state • Great Britain withdraws from Palestine • United Nations takes over

  12. United Nations Plan • Divide Palestine into two parts • One Arab and One Jewish • Jerusalem • Jews accepted but Arabs did not

  13. Division Dispute • Arabs got less than one half of land • Arabs got worst of the land • Arabs warn division will lead to war • May 1948, Independent Nation of Israel announced

  14. War • Arabs attack within hours of announcement • End of 1948, Israel controlled three-fourths of Palestine • Jordan and Egypt claimed rest of land • Palestinians left with no land
